Wellman Says He Gets Away From This Mess

2002-2003 we had freshman play a lot of minutes and won the conference regular season and were a 2 seed in the tournament. 5 of our top 6 guys were freshmen or sophomores. That will be the case next year, but you can bet expectations won't measure up to a season like that one.

It would be nice if Travis has a season like Josh Howard's that year too...

The worst part is that our attendance figures for this year were 18th out of 24 seasons, and we basically gave tickets away all year. It was like they knew they needed a talking point and improved attendance was going to be one of them. So they set out on a campaign to give away tickets all year to inflate the numbers.

I've been wondering just how much the AD is able to inflate attendance numbers. Is there any sort of rule they have to follow when they report attendance? Because there is no way that the numbers they report on ESPN are turnstile numbers. I feel like they have to be reporting total ticket sales for each game plus however many student seats they decide were filled (all of them).

Josh Howard was the national player of the year that year (in some publications). Travis will have to improve dramatically to be 3rd team all ACC. The best shot for next year is likely with Codi and Devin. We've been through this so many times in the past and players that don't show flashes as freshman basically plateau. Devin certainly did and you could argue about Codi. We have the post-grad x-factor that could change how the front court looks pretty dramatically.

Great article. Pretty much sums it up. 60% of minutes played by 18 or so year old freshman. A good home record and 2 top25 wins including a win over a #2 seed. 4th rated home attendance in the ACC. Those are the lead stats for keepbz.com!!! #GoDeacs

I hope your dj skills are better than your sports comprehension abilities.

Comparing our total attendance to other conference schools is meaningless if you don't factor in seating capacities and the size of the local populations. First of all, we have the 4th largest arena in the conference (about 14,600), after UNC, State, and UMD; UVA's new place is essentially the same size as the Joel; and there are six that seat 10K or less (VT, GT, BC, Clemson, Duke, Miami). On top of that, the Piedmont Triad is a much larger metro area than places like Charlottesville, Tallahassee, Greenville (SC), and Blacksburg. If you consider those things, it should be no surprise that we had the 4th best attendance, even if they had to give away 10%-20% of the tickets. It's no great accomplishment to get to 4th best in the conference under these circumstances.
