Understanding that many board contributors shudder to think that RW will be making any decisions about who our next FB and BB coaches are, it seems more likely than not that he will be doing so (at least in the short term) since he and Hatch appear to be joined at the (pick your anatomic region of choice).:tard:

Given that both main revenue sports coaches (one for continued good results, one for continued bad results) may move on in the coming year, who do you think is on RW's secret "short list" of potential replacements?

My FB choices would include Scott Satterfield at App State, Mike Norvell at Memphis, Jason Candle at Toledo, and Elko (former DC now at TAMU).

MY BB choices would include Ryan Odom, the guy at Loyola Chicago, Lavell Jordan at Butler, Wes Miller at UNC-G (have to humor DR), and Pat Kelsey.

Let the speculation begin (with the expected vitriol toward RW about ruining our marquee program with his bad choices...:rulz:

My hope is that the only thing on Wellman's short list is the name of retirement communities he's considering. I don't believe the donors that would help fund any buyouts or new contracts will allow him any more decisions on important hires at this point in his career. It was suggested back when Clawson was hired that the decision was made by committee anyway.

That said, it's WAY early to think about Clawson going anywhere.

I think Clawson is staying here for a while, but Manning is toast.

Will have to pay attention to see how Ryan Odom, Pat Kelsey, Wes Miller, Earl Grant, Nick McDevitt do.

Yes. He's completed his turnaround like he has done at past stops, but there aren't that many more jumps up for him to make. This season should go well, but there's potential for some fallback. The next jump is going to require more than a couple of bowl wins to prove he's ready for it. How many programs are out there that need a turn-around specialist that are also significantly better jobs than Wake? He's gotta show sustained success at Wake or a breakout ACC contender season or two before the big programs will come calling IMO. And even if they come calling, I don't think it's a given that he's gone.

We have to be the only fanbase in the world talking about replacing a successful coach, the week before the season starts.

So freaking LOWF!

Not necessarily too early, 4 years has been the theme of his career, and he already has proven himself a winner at a P5 conference. Maryland could pay Clawson more. Not a significantly better job, but that Under Armour money can do wonders. Illinois would also fit the bill. I would also add in Kentucky and Colorado. I still do not think that Clawson is being looked at by upper echelon jobs just yet.

Elko is likely the first call, but may be too expensive now. Any of the mid major guys listed above are likely on the list. Also if the change happens in a year or two, why not add Josh Gattis, who is currently Co-Offensive Coordinator and WR coach at Alabama.

For Bball, I hear Rick Pitino is available..

So freaking LOWF!

We know he is going to be a hot commodity. He is a great coach and teams will come calling. Nothing wrong with being realistic.

Especially since we've done a good job of keeping successful coaches in men's basketball and football.

Claws is starting to get national attention for the job he's done at Wake. If we win 7 games and make a bowl, I'd be surprised if he doesn't get interviews from Big 10 teams.

Clawson still has some mountains he can climb at Wake. His teams haven't sniffed a division or conference championship. (Clemson kinda in the way of both.) New Years Bowl. Four straight bowl games. Recruit the second, third and fourth waves of players, each better than the previous one.

Not many P5 jobs will give him the job security he has at Wake.

Not many places would give him a long enough leash to do the "tear it down and start over" that he did at Wake. Many P5 vacancies are at schools with a win now mentality.

Here's to him continuing to find challenges at Wake and Wake rewarding him for a job well done.

Yeah, you guys are dumber than DR if you think there won't be interest for Clawson if we have 8 wins this season.

There are always 5-6 P5 jobs that will open and usually 2-3 of those are unexpected. Whether Clawson has interest is another story, but you can bet he is already on the list of several ADs who have FB coaches on the hotseat. The question is, now that he is a successful P5 head coach whether he would see jumping to a Kansas or Colorado or Illinois as a real move up, or if he would rather stay a few more years, pad the resume and wait for a nicer SEC or B10 job to open up.

I hope Clawson's here for a long time, and there is certainly a LOWF element to thinking about his replacement entering the season

that said, 11 years ago last month we saw that nothing lasts forever and a good AD should always have a rough succession plan in place

end downer discussion, beat Tulane

I really think Clawson's name will come up often at the end of the season, but, and this may be pie in the sky, I think Clawson is happy at Wake and so long as we pay him and his staff, he will stay here. At least I hope so, he is the perfect fit for Wake, just like Prosser was

I get silly threads before the games start, but this thread is dumb.

While no one can argue about Manning's hot seat, today's hot commodity (Ryan Odom, Porter Moser, even DR's Wes Miller) are 'hot' because of last March. If those coaches/teams struggle this upcoming season, they will be replaced by other hot names based on next March. Impossible to know who is on the short list for next year now.

Give me break about speculating about Clawson's successor, can we just try to enjoy WF's nice run? BTW, no WF football or basketball coach has left WF for a "bigger/better" program, in at least 38 years, when Mackovic left WF to work under Tom Landry (Cowboys); Mackovic then went on to coach the Chiefs, Illinois, Texas and Arizona. Since then, WF has never been a stepping stone program in any major sport, and WF's attractiveness as a coaching destination has never been stronger. Have no idea why our own fanbase looks at WF as a stepping stone program when coaches do not.

I think society would be a better place if anyone who uses the terms short list, deep dive, crafted, or sourced in conversation was immediately deported.

For MBB, Richie McKay (Liberty) and Russell Turner (UC-I). I'm not saying either would be my first choice (given that we don't know who might be available), just that they seem to fit Wellman's standards.
