Here is a poem I wrote at age 11 in 1970 after the Deacs basketball season. Just found this yesterday rummaging through stuff. Feel free to add your own poem!
Here are the Deacons of Wake Forest
Big and strong and good
They may not be the very best
But probably they could.
Charlie Davis is so great,
For him you'd write a thousand odes
But don't forget his other mates
Neil Pastushok and "Posey" Rhoads.
And then there comes large Gil MacGregor
Strong and husky as a bear
And the junior Rich Haebeggar
A better player than just fair.
Bob Hook, Pat Kelly and Orenczak,
John Lewkowitz and Willie Griffin
To help Wake win they'd break their back
And Wake usually does when they come in.
They tarred the mighty Heels so easy,
Behind CD's massive 35
They left Virginia feeling queasy
The Demon Deacs are now alive!
Then came Charlie Davis Day,
Maryland plays Wake at the Coliseum
The Terrapins had come to play
By half, the Terps were up by one.
Then the halftime show began,
CD came out and everyone cheered
There was plenty of yelling, by many a fan,
But not one person there had jeered.
The second half started like a dream,
Wake ignited and led by three
From then on it was a big cream
Lead by Wake's mastermind, good 'ole CD.
But then came USC, who won by 20
Despite Charlie Davis' 34
Wake played them again, and lost by plenty
Which left the Deacons tired and sore.
They ended the year with a 16-9
And found that sorry teams could be for real
They also beat a powerful kind,
Which, of course, was Jacksonville.
That is the story of the '70 Deacs
Of their joys and achievements
And of sorrow and leaks*
And of all of the pressures they had to face.
* "sorrows and leaks"? Couldn't I have thought of "valleys and peaks"?
