Chicago teachers are striking

I wonder how many of those college grads DeacMan is talking about have stabbings or fights in their offices every week?

A lot more than have gangs with their offices.

A lot more than have stabbings in their offices every week.

A lot more than have fights in their offices every day.

I have family in Chicago, go up there all the time. It is still a shitty salary. I guess you want teachers who just "get along." I want teachers who make what the finance douchebags make, ya know. Our society rewards the wrong shit. yaay, free market!

Free market at work. Charter schools and private schools are the way to go!

Chicago is not like other major cities. It's extremely cheap when compared to places like SFO, LA, DC, NYC, Boston

I live in DC and I can tell you that you can live here on 75K. You will not live like a king but you can live a fairly middle class life.

Looking at the COL calculator 76K in Chicago means you would need to make $98K in DC to maintain quality of life. And those numbers were before benefits.

Some statistics, please.

You could live very well on $98K here.

Fascinating. What are the central issues of the strike again? Was "safety" one of them? You'd think if you ran the risk of dying when you went to work you'd put that near the top of the list. That or just quit your job.

You mean they're not pushing for school-issued kevlar vests?

Republicans would rather spend money on useless wars than on educating children.

Fascinating, but not especially helpful in this particular case.

Current Chicago city council. If memory serves me correctly the mayor is also not a Republican.

you guys do realize the gdp per capita in the us is 48k right?

a new college graduate making that as a teacher sounds pretty good to me.

No one is bitching about teachers making 76k, just saying that it's hard to call that underpaid. It's a pretty competitive salary and should be enough to attract high quality teachers. However they are not getting results. Either they don't have high quality teachers (which means they shouldn't be paying them 76k a year) or they do have good teachers who aren't getting good results (which means hey shouldn't be paying 76k a year).

Also comparing teaching wages to investment bankers is the definition of an apple to oranges comparison.

Well teachers don't start at 72k.....you work up to that over time. First year salary for a teacher in San Diego is ~46k. So you go through four years of college, then 1-1.5 more years in a credential program to start at 46k in San Diego. That's not that great for the amount of education invested.

That's an average not starting salary right?

From what I've heard, teachers want to get paid more to work longer school days and longer school years. Is this incorrect? If not, why is it unreasonable?
