CBM Thread: Peacemaker Season 2; Gen V Season 2 (Sept 17); Marvel Zombies (Sept 24)

CBS thought Supergirl was too expensive, I can't imagine they'll sink a lot of $$$ into whatever the Hell platform they're putting Discovery on.

Saw Batman: The Killing Joke in the local theater. It was about 70% full. Good crowd. No kids that I saw. The film was bookended by a minidocumentary on Hamill and a minidocumentary on the music in the film. I hope ticket sales justify more R rated superhero fare and some animated feature films. I'm excited about the upcoming Sony Spider-Man movie.

The movie was OK. Neither part was as good as it could have been. I can't really compare it to the original book, but I didn't like the choices that they made with how to tell Joker's origin. The highlight was the voice acting by Hamill. He showed some nice range. The film felt like two new episodes of B:TAS in terms of the style and score. You could tell a lot of the old crew was on it.

My reaction to it made me question how much Marvel has raised the bar. My buddy mentioned that Daredevil Season 2 did the "one bad day" thing well with Punisher. I want to go back and watch Mask of the Phantasm and Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker to see if they still hold up.

The reviews I've read about Killing Joke have been very unkind. The current RT score (57%) doesn't reflect the degree of dislike I've seen. Then again, someone said it might be the best Batman movie yet. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'll just have to see it and make my own judgement. Which I'm sure will be in the next few days.

Clark Gregg hints that because of the later time slot, AOS could cross over into the Netflix shows.

There are some specific reasons why people hate it.

The animation looks very stilted

yeah like it does not look good in that the animation looks weird and the editing of the trailer is bad. Also, why completely re-design the Joker if you're going to use Hamill?

i guess i'll just have to wait until it's available to stream and dive in

The animation is reminiscent of BTAS much more than any other WB DTV I've seen.

I'm not a comics guy so I haven't read The Killing Joke or The Dark Knight Returns. I found the animated versions of both to be disappointing considering both are definitive Batman stories. It seems both miss the boat by trying to do a paint-by-numbers version of the comic. In the case of The Killing Joke, they try to do paint by numbers and attach something else that doesn't quite work. It's worth seeing, but don't get your expectations up.

Also, it's barely R. Probably more PG-13. Still wouldn't take kids though.

And last night for obvious reasons, I started thinking about The Cape and Heroes Season 4. Ugh. Hard to believe those were 5 and 7 years ago. The genre has improved significantly.

Ha, The Cape... I'm probably the most forgiving viewer a comics genre show could have and I could only stomach 2 episodes of that.

I think today is the last day it's in theaters.

Pretty bummed to hear it's not very good. You would have thought it would work just given the source material alone.

Yes but today and all the days hence, I can stream it for around $20 to... let's just say substantially less.

Lots of AOS news. Here's a Ghost Rider teaser:

I'm just cut and pasting links from the Toonzone board where I got the info. Let me know if you want further info.

Lilli Birdsell has joined as a recurring character named Lucy - a haunting character with a violent side because of her past.

Summary of Comic Con panel. Confirm magic and science come into play just like in Phase 1 and seem to hint at more mining of Squadron Supreme.

Clark Gregg confirms regular upgrades to his prosthetic hand.

Whedon and Tancharoen said when they return to Inhumans, they will have a little more freedom and will be using some classic Inhumans.

Daisy will return to Skye's roots.

Some tidbits:

Doctor Strange paved the way to introduce Ghost Rider. So yes, AOS will tie-in with Doctor Strange somehow.
With Inhumans off the film schedule, AOS has some flexibility to use classic Inhumans.
Not in these articles, but Clark Gregg said the show will have a darker tone more in line with the Netflix shows since it is at 10:00 now.

Agents of SHIELD introduced the history of the Marvel cinematic universe’s version of the Inhumans in its second season. But, since there was going to be an Inhumans movie in 2018, the writers were a bit restricted in what they could do. With Inhumans completely lacking a release date right now—first pushed back and then dropped from the scheduleAgents of SHIELD is benefiting.
“We do have a little more freedom,” said Jed Whedon. “We’ve told a couple of seasons of stories but now we do have some more freedom. So when we return to focusing on Inhumans, we’ll be able to do a little bit more.” That freedom, Whedon and Tancharoen said, included being able to use some of the classic Inhumans. We’re pushing for Lockjaw.

As for how Doctor Strange will affect the the show, Whedon said that the introduction of that character and his powers into the universe paves the way for their biggest new character, Ghost Rider. “It’s one of the reasons we think Ghost Rider will fit this year is that the cinematic universe is being opened up into that world.”
“But, as we learned in Thor,” Whedon continued, “the Marvel approach is that magic is just science we don’t yet understand. We’re going to have both the introduction of magical elements in our show as well as very hardcore science.”
While planning for the movies can be a challenge, there are some advantages. “We can start to pose the questions that perhaps the movie will answer for us,” said Tancharoen. “And coming out of we see how that will affect our characters moving forward.”
“It’s sort of how other shows treat a webisode, a sort of ‘I don’t want to explain magic so Doctor Strange will do it,’” concluded Whedon. “Our webisode is gigantic.”

Very sad. Oh well. I wasn't really expecting a 2nd season. They could do a flashback arc on AOS. Wouldn't mind seeing 60s or 70s Peggy.
