Manning on Gottlieb show today

Not sure. I think Travis and Coron are critical losses and will be very hard to replace. Those were essentially our only shooters on the team.

Sure. But if Manning is the guy, he should help make up the difference in player development, preparation, and in-game coaching.

Any coach replacing a coach has bad as [Redacted] has to be expected to win bigger than his predecessor.

RE: the next two years- he's being honest. Barring an insanely easy OOC schedule, we will be lucky to be .500 overall next year. Well, unless we find a stud of a 5th year player.

As of now we only have one scholarship for 2015. It's hard to see one player lifting us that much for Year 2.

We finished over .500 this season with a clown as our head coach. Granted, we had a laughably easy OOC schedule this past season, but no reason why they won't make it a joke of a schedule again, especially to make Wellman's hire look as good as it can.

We will finish at least 4 games over .500 next season, I predict without even knowing the schedule. Having [Redacted] gone is such a massive upgrade.

There is a long way between getting curbstomped in almost every road loss and winning. It's not like we were losing by 4. You don't go from losing by 25 to winning overnight. Obviously I would like more wins, but in the first year with this horrific team I will be encouraged by being legitimately competitive in every game even if the win-loss total is not immensely improved.

Pretty softball interview. But I did agree with Glenn's assesment...Wake doesn't need to get 10 AAs each year...Their formula is getting solid 4 years players and supplement with the great player. He thought Manning would be good at this, well he implied it. Glenn never says anything where he could be proven wrong. I used to like him and now hes just an ass...

Wake needs AAs as much as any other school. We just don't get them. Thus, player development and solid, complementary players to pair with the occassional start are critical.

This.

I think he is just setting his expectations for the current players that he expects 40 minutes or playing hard on both ends of the court every game, and there isn't a guy on the team now who has shown they are close the level needed. A lot of that is Buzz's inability to get the best out of his players as far as effort. Do we really have a scholly problem? We need everyone next year because we certainly aren't going to replace many, if at all, this recruiting season. DM is apparently setting the tone, which is play my way, or I am going to find people to replace you and ask you to find somewhere else to play in 2015-16. I think he's on the right track. He's learned from some good ones, who were very hard on players and very demanding. He's sending the message you got a year to bring it or be gone, and it isn't lip service. And that crap game-to-game up and down effort is entirely unacceptable.

Is Jaybone taking any bets yet?

That is exactly where he should be at this time. The players on the team need to understand that effort, all the time, not just part of the time or some games, is required. That will get things going in the right direction. Those that aren't interested should find somewhere else to be.

It appears we will be playing FL OOC next year. That only leaves two other decent games that we can lost to be equal to last year.

I see no shot as us beating a better Duke team next year. UNC should be better as well. We swap L'ville for MD. VT should be better.

We're going to have to work to be .500 barring a really easy ACC schedule or signing a stud 5th year guy.

Did you copy that from last year?

I suspect those who do not "buy in" to Manning's way of doing things will not see the court and will quickly self select for the exit.

Year one I think folks who expect significant improvement are a bit off. Some improvement perhaps. But we are talking about a team that has been obliterated on the road more often than not. We don't just lose games. We get destroyed in games. We don't have stellar recruits on the way and we have lost two really solid contributors. So while the team is veteran, they've not enjoyed success and they're being asked to embrace a new system. Not exactly a glass half full scenario to inherit. I suspect the following year we'll start to see some signs that Spring is on the way.

Speaking of needing highly skilled players to make an impact given the limited roster spots, Manning just offered (or re-offered from his time at Tulsa) Allonzo Trier, a 2015 SG (4*/5*). If he were to come here, and there is obviously a long way to go, he has the chance to greatly impact WF's team given the need for outside shooting and strong offensive skills.

Discussion and more info is in the tacked recruiting thread.

Awesome. Would be a great addition.

That would make sense if it was just two years of poor road performance that we could pin on the players. Instead it is clearly a coach issue.

Winter is departing?

Agree with this. The long leash everyone's ready to give Manning is commendable, but we return 4 of our top 6 scorers. Losing McKie for a McClinton/Cav combo should be pretty close to a wash. Devin is a solid player and should benefit from Manning as a big man specialist. Sure, losing Coron hurts with no shooter ready to replace him, but he was pretty limited defensively. Even if we're stuck with just the Codi/Overton/Shelton group with the majority of guard minutes, you'd expect Overton to improve on this year's 33% mark from deep. Starting with the Duke game he shot 40% from deep to close out last year, small sample size obviously.

This isn't a team that's years away from being good, it's a team that's one player and some excellent coaching away from being good. Then again, it's also a Devin injury away from having no legitimate big men. There are plenty of ways to deal with the bloated class, which is Manning's job now.

The expectation for Wake should be the NCAA tournament, and next year we'll probably fall short and be an NIT-type year. We should absolutely be a tourney team during Codi/Devin's senior year, and year 3 is enough time for a good coach to rectify the class overload. It's not like he's inheriting 7 bad seniors, and there's a huge talent pool for 2016.

A suitable point guard makes a big difference. Look at UVA the last 2 years. Even though London isn't much of a scorer, he made the team much better. I think Shelton can do that too.

I'd love to say we should expect to make The Dance this year, but I can't. We have gaping holes in long range shooting and in rebounding. A healthy Shelton Mitchell should make it easier to score, but it doesn't fix the other problems.

I'm not even all that excited about the Manning hire, but I think we will win 20 games minimum next season.

I just hope that we play good basketball. The wins and losses will take care of themselves if Danny Manning is putting a good product court.

We have a few ACC level players on our team. The vast majority are not. But I do think that we could compete for the bubble next year. Most likely we will end up in the NIT but that will be fine. If we are being competitive it will all work out.
