In this era of rising hate-crime violence and racial animus, it is comforting to see so much vigilance surrounding the scorn of bigotry. But at the same time, it is unsettling, and downright distressing, to witness the rush to judgment on social media. Last weekend, venerated journalists, celebrities and thought leaders willingly impugned a group of young cadets and midshipmen to their millions of combined followers on Twitter without any insight into the facts of the case. The pitchfork army does not wait for investigations or even until commercial break. It screams for immediate action, and then moves on. And when it is wrong, it seldom offers mea culpas.
