Chicago Cubs Thread - Playoff Push Pending

I agree that they will click and still win the division by a few games. The run differential is a good sign (second best in the NL). Seemingly have stretches of games where we just can't stop striking out - could just be clustering but is frustrating to watch nonetheless.

Nobody seems that great in the NL. Maybe the Nats if everything clicks

The ability to win is obviously present. Consistency is missing individually and as a team. The first quarter of the season has been feast or famine offensively. 27th in fielding percentage and 4th in defensive efficiency. Bullpen has been good but someone is always going through a rough stretch. Hendricks, Lester and Chatwood have good numbers but Darvish and Quintana have been a disaster. The redeeming factor is that this has been the trend for two of the past three seasons, always followed by the best record in baseball after the all star break.

Kyle Schwarber opened tonight's game with the finest defensive play of his career. If it's not #1 on ESPN they don't understand the degree of difficulty. Still shaking my head in disbelief.

Good offensively against the Indians by Lake Erie. Not so much by Lake Michigan.

Seems we're in another offensive slump

Javy Bomb!

Baez your current NL RBI leader with 42. First Cub with 40 RBI+s before Memorial Day since Derrick Lee.

Holy shit Vasgersian can eat a massive dick. Terrible Harry impersonation during the stretch. I hate that guy.

Dunno if it's that, he got bombed by Miami and the Giants too.

It's either excellence or a disaster from him start to start. Last night could've easily gone the other way if he hadn't wriggled out of the 3rd inning jam

Cubs hitters seem to enjoy facing the Met bullpen. Randy Rosario is making the most of the opportunity provided him. So did Justin Hancock. Encouraging, especially considering Maddon's use of the bullpen.

Luke Farrell comes up from Iowa and gives the beleaguered bullpen five innings of shutout relief in a 14 inning 6-1 win. His reward will probably be a return ticket to Iowa. The Iowa bullpen shuttle has pitched 33.1 innings and given up 7 earned runs.

Was at the game on Sunday, probably 50%+ cubs fans. I like Citi Field, it's just out in the middle of nowhere.

Offense looked anemic for most of the series, but happy to see jhey performing and league average levels, it's an improvement.

Happy for Heyward. He’s had a rough go in Chicago, so it’s nice to see him get a big hit and some love. This has been his best season behind the plate as a Cub, especially since his return from the DL.

Heyward bailed out another bonehead Maddon bullpen move. Q pulled after an infield single against a guy that was batting .162 and completely overmatched in the first two at bats

I was following the action via Gametracker. Turned it off when Maddon made the move to the pen. Worse fears confirmed later.
Captain Hook is tough on starters (confidence) and relievers (overwork).

Tyler Chatwood has derailed. Has any starter ever average greater than 1 walk per inning over? Bro is all over the place.

Effectively wild!

Prolly a little too much neg here for a 35-24 team

Chatwood is a throwback. HOF Randy Johnson walked 152 in 201 innings in 1991, followed by 144 in 210 innings in 1992. That's 6.5 BB/9 innings over two seasons. Koufax averaged 5.3 BB/9 over his first five seasons. HOF icons. Herb Score averaged 6 BB/9 over his career. Some of the wild ones of the fifties/sixties were unbelievably bad. The most frightening was Ryne Duren. He averaged a walk per inning in 1960 for the Yankees and 6 BB/9 over his career as a reliever. He wore heavy, thick horned rim glasses and threw fire. One of his five warm up pitches always sailed to the backstop. Sometimes all of them did. You never saw anyone dig in the box when Duren pitched. Life is too precious. You're in NYC DaDeacs. Ask an old Yankee fan about Duren.

Edit. At 8.64 BB/9, Chatwood appears to be making a concerted effort to set a new record for futility. Question is this...has he the consistency to keep it up for an entire season.
