Chicago Cubs Thread - Playoff Push Pending

2015 Chicago Cubs Thread: 67-50 Get some wins!

Nice bounce back win today. Arrieta with another solid outing. Beating the Braves, regardless of how shitty they are, feels fantastic to any Cubs fan from NC.

Cubs beat Braves 7-1. Arrieta with his 15th win. Rizzo hits a three run HR and Russell hits a solo shot. Coghlan with a triple and a single for 2 RBI's. Hopefully, back in the saddle again.

Cubs were the fourth biggest favorites of the year tonight, behind only two Kershaw starts and Greinke at home vs Philly. Lots o' respek for what Arrieta has become (and very little for ATL)

Anyone have a better kid than mine? Nope... none of you do. He brought this back from his trip to Chicago.

Going to the game today. Seats 3rd row behind the Cubs' pen. :woot:

Tough matchup today - Miller is pitching well even though he isn't getting any wins and Hendricks has been very spotty.

Need the bats to keep it up.

The bats were just offensive enough to provide the Cubs with a 5-3 victory. Hendricks pitching was improved but the bullpen was outstanding with four innings of shutout baseball. Motte got his eighth win, Grimm and Strop a hold and Rondon the save. Perez vs. Haren tomorrow.

So, James Russell has an ERA of 16.20 in his past 3 appearances, 15.43 over his past 5 and 10.80 over his past 9 appearances. In his previous 36 appearances? ERA at 2.47. August has not been good to James Russell. Has given up 10 ER in his last 9 appearances, covering 8 1/3 inning - his previous 36 appearances, covering 21 innings has 6 ER. We need him to stop sucking, especially with Strop having the yips and Motte being average and Rondon having no clue how to pitch a 9th inning.

Although, have to say, Clayton Richard is looking solid in the pen - 3 appearances, 6+ innings only 1 ER, and 8 Ks, which is surprising because he is not a strikeout pitcher - this could be the perfect role for him. But, thats another lefty in the pen, with Wood looking solid in his long reliever role (31 appearances, 44 IP, 15 ER, 52 Ks, only 1 HR).

The Cubs pitchers as a team, have 1051 Ks, 20 off the lead (Indians) and Cubs batters have 1102 Ks, first place, 15 ahead of the Astros. Cubs batters have also walked 417 times, second in the bigs behind the Dodgers 419. Not sure what all of this means, but it seems weird that the Cubs have a legitimate chance to lead the league in Ks and BBs as batters and lead the league in Ks as pitchers (Cubs pitchers are 25th in the league in BBs).

Russell has had a tough month. His ERA is inflated after giving up six runs in two appearances against the Tigers. As JD mentioned he took one for the team in game 2. Motte got hit at the beginning of the year and then got tough. He has had another difficult stretch. Hopefully, last night's victory helps him revert to tough. Strop has a couple of lousy appearances then becomes unhittable for a few weeks. Fortunately there is more good than bad. Rondon seems to be the same way. On the whole our bullpen has been effective. My concern is that it is wearing down. I think that is why they keep looking for new arms. Hopefully, Hunter, Richard and Soriano can provide relief.

Five minute delay over a Russell (eventual) home run challenge on whether or not a Cubs' fan reached over the basket line to interfere.

Thank you Edwin! Cubs come back from a 7-3 deficit to beat the Braves 9-7. Back to back HR's by Montero and Soler in the eighth off of Edwin Jackson provide the margin of victory. Hunter, Richard, Strop and Rondon provide four innings of one hit shutout relief. Russell tied the game in the 6th with a HR and Rizzo had a solo shot. Every position player reached base and all but Schwarber scored. This team appears to believe in their ability to win. Hell, I'm even beginning to believe it. Baseball is fun again.

Wind was definitely a huge help tonight. Those balls out to left center were going deep from the get-go.
