Role of the Media

Beers, nostalgia and worry in Michigan as historic GM plant closes

The factory’s official closure date is Thursday, the day after the two-night Democratic presidential debate in Detroit, 10 miles south of here. The plant’s home, Macomb County, is a bellwether that President Trump carried by nearly 12 points in 2016 and President Obama won in the two prior elections.

Maria Nuculaj, the restaurant’s owner, who is not affiliated with a political party, is among those who twice voted for Obama before voting for Trump in 2016. She recalled Trump coming to Warren and nearby Sterling Heights days before the election and promising to stop the bleeding of manufacturing jobs that was hammering the middle class.

“I liked that he said the jobs would stay here. That made me feel more secure,” Nuculaj said. “But then I hear [about the plant closing]. What the hell is going on?” Nuculaj added that she would not vote for Trump in 2020.

LA Times found the unicorn.

CNN still today is framing each question for their morning after with candidates as "thanks so much for being on stage offering alternatives to Sanders and Warren, would you like to say more about that?"

this guy who covers washington for the NYT is getting ratio'd to hell on twitter:

Location = race takes are the worst whether it is this kind of crap, New York = Jewish, inner city = black, or suburbs = white.

1) That tweet is totally nonsensical, but highlights how the NY Times ends up with 2,000 pieces quoting white people from diners in rural PA.

2) FFS, Brian Williams. "A very direct question: how does DEMS WANNA TAKE YOUR TRUCKS AWAY!! play in the Midwest?"

Wilkes County NC is hardly a place that generates national news, but from the fall of 2016 until around early 2018, there were a spate of articles and news segments on national news organizations about why white voters in Wilkes (which was portrayed as the stereotypical rural white county in America) were so heavily for Trump. The NY Times did a front-page story, MSNBC did a story, NBC's Meet the Press did a story, US News & World Report, and even PBS all came to Wilkes to interview local fundie preachers, grizzled retired diners, etc. Trump's election has made the DC and NY news media obsessed with working-class whites around the country. The fact that they are a steadily shrinking share of the electorate doesn't matter, that they are already in the tank for Trump and the GOP doesn't seem to register, and that they may not be the key demographic swing group in the next election doesn't seem to matter either. If you're a reporter or news outlet, you've just got to find some white diners in Smalltown, USA to interview about why they love Trump so much, and hate the Democrats, and get their opinions on everything politics-related. If you belong to virtually any other demographic - minorities, women, urban residents, non-Evangelical Christians - you'll find that your views get much less attention. Since November 2016, small-town diners and churches are apparently the go-to place for reporters and news outlets.

Maybe they’re thinking if they can get these folks to see in print how absurd, nonsensical and unreal their reasons are for supporting Trump then maybe they and others like them will engage their critical thinking and realize the absurdity.

Well that won’t work. Like you said, they’re willing to go down with the Trump ship to save their ignorant pride before admitting they’re wrong. Let them. Appeal to folks receptive to the message.

They are in swing states

Plenty of people are in swing states especially liberals and minorities who didn’t vote at all in 2016. Why aren’t they in Milwaukee barbershops, Philly clubs, or shops on Ninth Street in Durham? They could post up in any of the many college campuses in the Triangle.

The whole thing reeks of white reporters trying to understand their parents to magnify their experiences over the experiences of many others.

And when Trump goes back to his usual divisive and racist and misogynistic tweets and speeches in a few days, I'm sure that the NY Times will fail to note the change (or say that it's really just a return to his normal behavior.) "Librul mainstream news media" indeed.

The left pressured the Times to change a factual article headline to an editorialized article headline. This was to appease a political party.

Shame on anyone defending this.

The NYT executive editor disagrees with you

“It was written on deadline and when it was passed along for approval we all saw it was a bad headline and changed it pretty quickly,” Baquet texted The Daily Beast on Tuesday morning as critics continued to vent their outrage on social media.

well of course that's what the NYT executive editor says. he's in the tank.

did i do that right whatamount?
