Ongoing Dem Debacle Thread: Commander will kill us all

It definitely seems like the Overton window on this has moved significantly and Democrats can keep it moving toward single payer if they play their cards right. Even if the Pubs control the Senate after 2020 or hold the filibuster, there may be opportunities to pick off Pub senators who represent states with strong polling on single payer and populations who really need the help (which, to be honest, is most Pub states). It's not going to be easy and will require continued hard work on the grass roots, which Dems thankfully rediscovered in 2018.

health insurance is unpopular because it's fucking dumb that we have to pay money to keep ourselves fit, productive members of society

I too would prefer some type of single payer system. But what we're doing now in debating M4A has little place in the actual world because it has no chance of passing in the foreseeable future. There is absolutely zero Pub support for M4A at this time (hell, they're hell bent against the mandate, which was supposed to help control costs), and they control the senate now and will likely control it after 2020. Even if the Dems get it in 2022, we won't have a filibuster proof majority. So the best that we can hope for in the near term is to patch up the ACA and hopefully find some better way to control costs. Dem candidates can savage each other to their hearts content over the next year and a half debating what M4A really means and how much it will cost. It's just not happening in our next president's term. Maybe the best thing about M4A is that we're at least openly talking about a single payer delivery system, which is a baby step in the right direction.

The other thing I'd say is that, until we do finally adopt a single payer system, yes, the insurance industry has a seat at the table. Back in the 70s and 80s when I was a kid, when congress was considering legislation, they'd bring in the groups representing the affected industries and consumers and hold hearings. But 2 years ago, the only group the Pub congress spoke with concerning their proposed legislation was the insurance industry, not the AMA, and AHA or consumer groups. And hell, they even excluded the insurance industry on their last try, and even the insurance industry came out against their last bill because of their block grant to states proposal. So until we're actually proposing to pass some kind of single payer system, yeah, they get a seat at the table along with the AMA, AHA and consumer groups.
I have to grudgingly agree with most of this, its a good post, but I really think the Dems have to remove the fillibuster to pass environmental legislation ASAP.

Yep. And Republicans will keep talking about how M4A or whatever single-payer or universal system will "bankrupt" the US. Meanwhile, plenty of Americans are already bankrupt from health care costs and most of the rest of us are only an injury away.

I don’t think it is dumb that we have to pay money for something that is valuable.

That’s not dumb. What’s dumb is thinking free markets can determine the cost for your health and your life.

Before this is all done, VA may well have a right-wing GOP governor, who was elected Speaker of the VA House after the state GOP won control of the state house by pulling a name out of a bowl. What a mess for VA Democrats. What's interesting is that many of these revelations keep being released or amplified by a right-wing VA political blog called Big League Politics. If successful, this could become the template to remove Dem politicians in lots of states - dig up dirt from their past, publicize it to the max, and wait for the mainstream news media to pick it up and amplify it.

as someone who grew up in FL and whose wife grew up in VA, I'm glad her state is finally taking the spotlight for dumb shit

So doing what the Dems have done for decades. Not saying its right, but it is what it is.

I’m all for better vetting of our public officials.

How the hell did DJT still get elected? It’s really astounding. That dude is just Teflon.

But the problem is that the GOP has made it quite clear that when it comes to allegations of sexual assault/harassment they don't care. At all. If they did, Trump wouldn't be POTUS. So, one party cares about such things and eats its own when they face accusations, the other party's politicians just ignore or deny such allegations and get promotions to the SC (Thomas, Kavanaugh) or some other office. Nice.
