My Top 25 Albums of 2017

17. Grandaddy - Last Place

Well, not quite last place.

Can't really tell if this album is decent or just sounds good because of how awful that last one was.

Wake Forest reference !

They're from Modesto. I've been to Modesto !

A six-minute plus piano ballad. Indulge yourselves bros !

16. Hurray for The Riff Raff - Navigator

This is becoming increasingly more difficult.

Kind of a female Lou Reed.

Pretty good overall.

18. Wolf Parade - Cry, Cry, Cry

This one sounds like fun.

Ahh, Canadians.

Just a suggestion; maybe do a Top 15 Albums of 2018.

These guys try realllllly hard.

Wolf Parade would not be fun to hang out with backstage.

I mean, some of these songs sound like parodies.

"Weaponized" is an aggressively bad song.

I guess this sounds good to people who are trapped by Canadian broadcast radio laws.

Done with this. Maybe someone else can give it a listen and tell me what I'm missing because this album absolutely sucks. Worst one yet.

i found the chief of police

15. Sheer Mag - Need to Feel Your Love

All right, more ROCK, kind of.

Lol, this is one of Townie's local Philly bands that's going nowhere.

Nothing to see here.

Good guitar work but this lead singer isn't that good.

Title track is pretty good though.

14. Moses Sumney - Aromanticism

No idea what to expect.

Man on the Moon (Reprise). Is this an REM cover ?

It's not.

This album is like some indie Xmas album. This could just as easily be some weird version of Sleigh Ride.

Pretty sure I would run out of a record store if this were playing.

The last minute of Lonely World wasn't bad.

Well, that wasn't very satisfying. I have to wonder what the objective was when Moses set out to make this album.

13. Strand of Oaks - Hard Love

Hard Love -- like your mom likes it.

Kinda dark, layered sound.

More of Townie's Philly sound, but totally worth a listen.

Shades of Wye Oak, which I guess makes sense because they both have "Oak" in the band name.

Saw Strand of Oaks this weekend. So fucking good. He has a new album out too.

12. Big K.R.I.T. - 4eva Is A Mighty Long Time

I'm definitely suspicious of a rap double-album. Dudes usually run out of shit to spit.

Yeah, I was right again. Too long, but good.

11. Sylvan Esso - What Now

Oh yeah, looking forward to this.

Probably better live !

This is what has become of Durham, NC.

Hoping that "Die Young"is a Ke$ha cover.

Drat ! Foiled again!

I like it though. It's like they have a producer with a reasonable level of competence, unlike certain other previous submissions.

This "Radio" song expresses a sentiment similar to that of Elvis Costello's song of the same name (aka eponymous). This one is just a little more vulgar.

Townie, you definitely should have just done a Top 13.

I'm listening to U2's new album "Songs of Experience" and it is not threatening this list, even with a cameo from Kendrick Lamar.

ETA: It's not terrible, just not all that great.

Let me assert that Songs of Experience would be in the Top 15 on Townie's List if I were to insert it.

10. The New Pornographers - Whiteout Conditions

This one's good, but I already knew this. Saw them open for Spoon in an electrical storm this summer. Show got postponed halfway through their set. Really went to the show to see New Pornographers.

9. Kendrick Lamar - DAMN.

I think we've reached a consensus that this a great album, but how great ?

I like that the song titles are in ALL CAPS and include a period. at the end.
