Crossing the border and applying for asylum is not "illegal immigration"

This is a very important piece of context that has been completely hijacked by the Stephen Miller's of the world. The United States is signatory to the 1951/67 UN Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees. Under this convention a refugee is defined as:

A person who owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality and is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country; or who, not having a nationality and being outside the country of his former habitual residence as a result of such events, is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to return to it.

By Article 31 of the convention, countries who belong to the convention (the USA included) must not "impose penalties on refugees who entered illegally in search of asylum if they present themselves".

What the USA has done is try to make it extremely difficult to enter the USA to present yourself for asylum - barring entry at border entries (dating from the Clinton administration) and refusing to allow asylum seekers onto US soil where they can then apply for asylum (you cannot apply outside of the country). This has created a scenario where to apply for asylum you have to cross the border at non approved border crossing and then be arrested. You then present yourself for asylum and wait through the 6 months to years long process.

Painting these people who qualify for protected status as "illegal" is simply a way to dehumanize them so the Miller's of the world can get away with stuffing them into concentration camps. The idea being that if you know that you will spend months to years as an "illegal" in a cage with your children ripped away from you while waiting for your asylum case to work through the system, you will be less likely to apply for asylum in the first place. This is a gross manipulation of the system and pure and simple cruelty.

Not in favor of family separation by any means, but I do have a question:
If you're fleeing persecution in El Salvador, Honduras, etc., is Mexico forcing them to go to the U.S., or can they seek asylum there? Just seems the language and cultural fit would better serve them there.

They wouldn't get all the free stuff in Mexico that the Democrats would give them in the U.S.

Mexico has seen a 66% rise in asylum applications last year, and probably even more this year. That being said, for those fleeing organized gang violence Mexico does not provide a safe haven because of the ties between their own criminal organizations and the ones further south.

One of the steps the US should be taking is to shore up aid organizations and resettlement programs in Mexico to help Mexico handle refugees from their southern borders better, but it's very hard to pry funding loose for those programs despite the fact they would dramatically help the situation both inside Mexico and along our own border.

As of 2012 Mexico actually has universal health care coverage, unlike in the USA - there's a lot more "free stuff" for accepted refugees there than in the US. And in most of Mexico, living conditions are relatively high ... it's the reason we have net negative migration with Mexico right now, quality of life has increased across most of the country (with the exception of the gang violence in the border states).

A healthy, stable Mexico is a huge benefit to the USA - but we seem so intent on trying to undermine that whenever we can.

But your hatred and ignorance allowed you to vote for a pervert. Your vote for Trump was one of the board's most hypocritical acts in the over quarter of a century of Wake boards back to AOL days. You were beyond staunchly for the NC bathroom law fearing a transgender person might someday be in the same bathroom with your granddaughter. However, you stridently and unashamedly Trump who bragged on national radio that it was a "perk" and "quality control" to catch 13-16 yo girls naked and carry on conversations with them.

You worried about what may happen, but supported a self-admitted pervert who has had several young women who corroborate Trump's statement. You blindly support this pervert. It shows you to be a hypocrite and to have no real moral center.
