2020 Democratic Presidential Nominees

I am really digging Mayor Pete

the guy is unflappable, even with the hypocritical bible thumping in Iowa. it is the utmost importance to me that an adult get back into the WH. time to bring some sort of prestige back to the Presidency...a long way to go after this adolescent abortion of a president.

Do you think that the other candidates are “less adult” than Buttigieg?

His latest “volunteer for America” proposal seems pretty awful not only as rhetoric but also policy. Young people need good jobs, not more bullshit graduate/professional school application unpaid or underpaid service “experiences.”

Yeah but it’s a Bernie supporter giving Warren backhanded compliments to take shots at Beto and Pete.

Why do you consider the compliments to be backhanded?

Also, where do you get Bernie supporter from that article? I didn’t see him mentioned once.

mainly the one in the WH.

i will read up on "volunteer for America", ty

Some is backhanded. Most of the back half is straight up criticism.

But the purpose of the article is for the #2 in polls to bash the #3 and #4 to court supporters of #6 to get those votes if she drops out.

Jacob is a Bernie supporter and he’s quite pro-socialist in the article.

Doug Henwood wrote the piece in Jacobin. He probably has similar hangups about Sanders, based on his commentary on Warren.

As a former Americorps worker, your characterization of what Buttigieg suggested is false. More civil service programs that are properly funded would do wonders for youth and young adults. It is not an unpaid internship, it is not an "experience".

Have you looked at his proposal, ADT? How would you characterize it? It was light on details, but from what I could tell, it sounds like the civil service programs that aren't particularly helpful.

Strick, is there any research on the long term benefits of civil device programs? Seems like they could benefit some people but not sure who and under what conditions. It seems like a nice thing to say people should do but I’m not sure about if they matter.

I'm not sure, to be honest with you, but research on civil service organizations/volunteering (e.g., Eliasoph) suggests that long-term engagement is far more helpful/less disruptive. The move towards "_____ for America" strikes me as regressive, doing more for the modal volunteer/participant than for the modal community member served.

Pete references the loss of social cohesion discussed in Bowling Alone. I think he understands the need for long term engagement given that fewer people are finding it in their jobs.

I agree that “_________ for America” seems regressive.

Isn't it common sociological knowledge that the general loss of social cohesion discussed in Bowling Alone isn't exactly empirically true?

Yes. I don’t think he specifically referenced the book just the concept in terms of identity formation.

That's fair, though there are a ton of communities that aren't derived from civil/civic organizations. That's the critique from what I can tell.

Yeah. The concept needs to be updated. I would consider these boards to be such a community.

God help us.

If the boards aren't a community, then why have you expended nearly 10k posts on here and probably tens of thousands of posts on other iterations of Wake boards?

tl;dr why do you bother?

1) old
2) kids
3) masochist
4) nothing better to do.

“South Bend, Ind. Mayor Pete Buttigieg has surged into the top tier of candidates in the Democratic presidential primary, according to a new poll.

The online survey from Change Research, a left-leaning polling outlet, finds former Vice President Joe Biden at 21 percent support, followed by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) at 20 percent and Buttigieg at 17 percent.

That’s a 15-point gain for Buttigieg in the past month, according to the poll, while Biden has fallen by 15 points and Sanders shed 4 points in the same survey.”
