Would anyone be upset if Manning was fired today.

That's the $64,000.00 question. After [Redacted] ran the program into the ground, no one wanted to come here. Manning was like 5th or 6th on our list, and CP3 didn't want him to be the coach.

I guess CP3 is smarter than most Wake grads.

Plenty of good coaches out there. We have talked about many of them. You just can't get a "name" with our program in the toilet. Probably better that way anyway.

Many of the legendary coaches went to the school they excelled at with little name recognition beforehand. Coach Kaye and Dean Smith for sure. Bobby Knight also, maybe.

Just need somebody to make a smart choice on a smart young coach. Just do the exact opposite of what we did the last two hires.

Nobody on this staff deserves to be the interim even the 72 year old who hasn’t been a head coach in 10 seasons and hasn’t been at Wake in 18.

Being away from wake that long is definitely a plus.

No. It’s a lost season either way. Every Wake fan I know thinks the program is a joke or has no idea who is the coach or on the team.

But the real question is who is willing to take the job at this point + how does the buyout hinder us?

Go young and cheap with high upside.

Not always easy to figure out which young, cheap coach HAS the high upside. Many have an effective ceiling as successful mid major coach or as assistant at P6 program.

What do you look for that tells you a mid-major head coach can successfully recruit top 100 players when he isn't getting them because he is working at a mid major school?

How do you figure out which assistant at a P6 program will have the leadership, managerial and organizational skills to effectively lead a P6 program? And, in addition, how to tell which guy will be an excellent fit for Wake. Some guys are simply better fits for mega state U.

Wake needs the "right fit" person who is an excellent basketball coach.

You talk to them. Find out what makes them tick. You want someone who is bright, energetic, charismatic, enthusiastic. You want someone who gets the advantages that Wake has. You also want somebody that thinks basketball all the time.

You find that guy and you have Dave Clawson in a gym. If you are a high energy charismatic guy, you will be able to recruit.

The problem is, Wellman would have to hire 100% against type when compared with his last 2 hires.

Cannot be any other reason beyond the toxicity of perception caused by this man's awful decision-making, and self-aggrandizing posturing and BS-selling with respect to not only Dino's dismissal, but his defense of Bzdoofus and the ridiculous "culture campaign" he waged whilst positioning himself as this beyond-reproach protector of student athlete pureness. And all we got was embarrassment and ridicule, and cringe-worthy TV appearances by this man when he was on the NCAAT committee.

if not shit-canned, cuz let's face it, that ain't happening, he needs to be stripped of all control of the next coaching hire by the BoT and Nathan Hatch. DO. IT. NOW.

Monday's coming.

A new work week with a new coach.

Make it happen, Ronnie!

He said all of the right things in his initial press conference and was about as different from Bz as you could be.
I think that's the way Wellman looked at it. Bz was the anti-Dino. Manning is the anti-Bz. Not a great criteria for hiring a coach. It's weird. Wellman seems to make pretty good hires in all the other sports...not perfect but decent and competitive..but then sucks at bball. At least Manning was considered to be an up and coming talent. On the other hand, it's hard to imagine someone wanting to be a head coach who is as disinterested as he seems to be.

This year was destined to suck with an almost completely new team. We should have cut bait last season. Don't think anyone would even notice if we fired him now.

How was Manning the anti-Buzz? Seems like the same except one is taller and has a darker complexion. Neither has a personality. Neither can coach defense. Neither had ever shown the ability to run a college basketball program. Neither seemed to care half as much as your average fan.

The point is at the time of hire, not what we've learned 4 years later.

Sure, you never know exactly. But with a cheaper contract it’s less painful and worth the risk at this point IMO. If I thought we could attract a top coach that would be a different story but it’s clear the last almost 10 years that’s unlikely.

Bzz can coach defense.

Bzz would do more with our current talent than DM. But he would never be able to recruit our current talent.

Buzz had one thing Manning never had and never will have: Charisma!

Hahaha j/k

Is there any reason to think Nestor wants to deal with the stress and commitment that would come with being the interim head coach?

I would be ecstatic! Please Wellman, fire him tonight and name Nestor or Childress the interim coach until after the season when you can hire a real one.

Absolutely not. I would rather keep Manning another season than let Wellman hire another BB coach.

Only way that works is if Wellman will be gone in a year. If Wellman's the AD for another 2-3 years, you may as well bring in another HC now.
