Travel Photo Thread

The Croatia one is actually Slovenia. I think Husky just offended an entire country.

Wow...embarrassing. :couch: Definitely Slovenia. My friend might literally kill me if he saw that.

Tell me more about the Cambodia picture... what's going on there?

And the Croatia one is gorgeous!

Angkor Wat is a huge set of temples built in the 12th century. It's also one of the few remaining religious structures that survived the Khmer Rouge years. I believe the main temple is the largest religious structure in the world. But because the temples had to be abandoned for such a long time, trees have grown up through the huge stone foundations. The temples themselves put places like Machu Picchu to shame. Every inch of the 60 something temples is covered in detailed carvings.

how much time did you spend in Angor Wat HuskyDeac? would like to visit there someday

I spent a week in Siem Reap including 3 full days exploring the temple compound. Two days was probably more than enough though. I'd recommend seeing the smaller less interesting ones first. I did the opposite and felt a bit disappointed at some of the later ones.

Super cool photo. What a view from up there.

I have a pair of Canon point-and-shoots that I've used for the last 5-6 years. They both take great photos and have the added benefit of sliding into your pocket, so I can snap tons and tons of photos on our trips without having to lug around a giant DSLR.

That being said, I still enhance most of my stuff in Photoshop. The point-and-shoots are great for convenience and they have a startling number of photo types and modes, but I find that the majority of my photos are just a little bit over- or under-exposed, so they usually need a slight touch up.

so there's hope for me yet!

I use Sony point-and-shoot (higher-end models but still a far cry from DSLR) and I guess I'll just have to try Photoshop or similar if I really want to make my photos better. I believe I've "enhanced" one photo, once. Mine are all just straight from the camera, aside from cropping.

Oh and I need to go more beautiful places.

cool, thanks for the lesson. I don't know if it's the type of tree or just the photo, but it looked like the tree was like oozing out of the buildings. Very lovely looking place.

Jeez, I want to travel to EVERYWHERE.

Photoshop gives hope to all amateur photographers (although the software is stupid expensive for weekend warrior types). Most point-and-shoot photos are slightly overexposed/washed out because people naturally focus on the object they want to photograph. For nature or landscape photography, it's usually best to focus the camera on the sky, then pull it down to your target to take the photo. The basic effect is that it lets more light into the lens, causing the aperature to tighten and your photo to be slightly underexposed. Remember, it's always easier to enhance details in an underexposed photo than an overexposed one.

Rebuttal time:

Hmm, what is that little girl smelling?

It wasn't curiosity that killed the cat; it was RTQ:

I know it's repetitive, but I've been banging the Slovenia / Croatia drum on this board for a while. If you're considering a vacation in the near future, it's very, very hard to beat that area.

Couldn't agree more. Slovenia is my favorite "undiscovered" country. It's tiny, but gorgeous. It has the Alps, rolling hills, cute towns, a fun capital, beaches, and excellent transportation infrastructure.

Croatia is, well, not so undiscovered, but is justifiably popular with tourists. It's pretty amazing as well and has one of the longest coastlines of pure stunning scenery in the world.

vadtoy is in Chernobyl this week doing some research - here's a shot she took of Nuclear Power Plant #4 and the "sarcophagus" which was constructed around it to prevent the release of anymore nuclear material.

I worked in Slovenia for a while last year. I would highly recommend Ljubljana and especially Piran. Piran is the local town next to the more touristy town of Portorož (where there is a 4 star resort). The village I lived in was not so fun, but these two cities were amazing!
