the official new supreme court thread - Very political

So if the majority of the Supreme Court believes we only have rights that are specifically outlined in the Constitution, do Americans have any natural rights?

The right to automatic weapons that were not even conceived of by our founders.

Fu k. These next few years...

If you asked me jan 5th I would have said there is not way things get worse. #Naive #YouCanLearnALotFromADummy

They just keep getting bolder and bolder, and all because they never seem to pay much of a price (if any) at the voting booth. Trump's election in 2016 was a pivotal moment, as it showed conservatives they could nominate the type of candidate everyone thought would sink them, and instead he beat their personal Wicked Witch, Hillary. No more code words or dog whistles, just be loud and proud about your bigotry and ignorance. Now they're ready to achieve their longtime dream of overturning Roe - thanks to Trump appointing a third of the court in his 4 years - and red states are set to pass draconian laws that are harsher than they could have imagined just a few years ago. And it looks like they won't pay any price at the polls this November either. And so they'll just keep pushing - Roe is just the beginning.

It may have been a half basket of deplorables in 2016 but everyone still voting republican is truly deplorable.

Also, only half were showing their stripes. They all are now.

Hillary was being kind when she said half. Go back and read it. She was pandering to them, not calling out the whole GOP.

Yep

And where/when there’s voter backlash…they’re working furiously to control that by cheating.

Nice knowing you, mostly legitimate democracy.

There is no justifying a Republican vote over the past 10-15 years. None.

And yet…there are many highly deceived well-meaning people firmly stuck on voting Republican.

I suppose entrenched ignorance is pretty deplorable.

And sad.

Imagine disregarding the will of 81 million Americans while demanding obedience to the will of 5.

But he referred a couple of times to the “unfortunate events” of the past week, and in a question-and-answer session led by a former clerk, he said he worried about declining respect for institutions and the rule of law.

“It bodes ill for a free society,” he said. It can’t be that institutions “give you only the outcome you want, or can be bullied” to do the same, he said.

The court’s longest-serving justice said he also worried about a “different attitude of the young” that might not show the same respect for the law as past generations did. “Recent events have shown this major change,” he said.

Interesting words for someone who tried to use his position of power to cover up his wife's attempts to overturn an election because of an outcome she didn't like.

(Always, always projecting.)
