Jeez that's awful. FWIW, if he served and was honorably discharged, I think the Navy can cover the funeral, or at least part of it. It may be after the fact now, though, as this happened a few weeks ago https://www.militaryonesource.mil/military-life-cycle/veterans-military-funeral-honors/eligibility/

The military provides $100,000 tax free to survivors of active duty members. Also provided to some reserves, depending on military status at time of death. The survivor should have a survivor assistance officer assigned to help with this kind of stuff.

Was your buddy active duty or???
