WFU Hoops: '22-'23 Roster Construction - +Ituka/Carr/Appleby/Bradford

Still salty that 23 wins (13-7 ACC) somehow wasn't enough to get us a NCAAT bid.

Hope COY Forbes got some answers from uncheat who were on the NCAAT committee at last week's conference meetings.

not to pour salt on your salty wounds, but the simple answer is to play better teams and beat some good ones (going 0-4 against Duke and Miami hurt quite a bit)

Given the makeup of this team I think a big leap forward in 23-24 is more likely than next year. But maybe the extra practices and the European trip this summer will help the team jell and develop ahead of schedule.

Losing to Clemson and BC at the end of the year sealed our NIT fate.

If LaRavia and Williamson decide to pull a Bacot come back, we’re going to be really tough….

imo your post is also a bit of revisionist history (downplaying the excitement of last years bunch) but it’s ultimately not really relevant as we can objectively compare the track record of the players brought in as OGB did a couple pages ago.

but your last point is also a good one, last years group greatly exceeded expectations which i don’t think we can’t expect to happen again, which should also temper expectations going into next year.

Fair.

I think that 21/22 was the first time since 1992 that the Deacs have exceeded expectations so it weird for us. I expect a bit of a fall off next season, like a 7th or 8th place finish.

We do not have to be better than last year to make the tourney. Only one team higher than us on kenpom got left out, right? Objectively we were almost a lock.

What is the optimistic take on how we would be better next year? Obviously having Jake back would be part of that, but I do not see that happening. Cut down on turnovers? Ok. What other areas could show improvement? At this time it does not seem like rebounding. Shooting efficiency was so good last year it will be hard to improve that. Defense?

Wake could be a worse team next year compared to last but have a better postseason outcome. We’ll play a better non conference schedule and hopefully the ACC won’t have a dreadful Nov-Dec to create a bad stigma. This leads to way more Q1 opps. We could realistically be 50th in KP instead of 35th and end up with a better shot at the tourney. Also not throwing up on ourselves in Greensboro would be helpful.

Last season we were good early, and plateaued late. UNC sucked early and made a run. I look for this new addition to struggle early and get better every week. Last season we just stopped improving. Forbes

Where and when is the European trip?

Nice. Wouldn’t hurt to throw a Sweden trip in there.

Didn’t help that Alondes got turf toe right around the time he played more minutes than he had in his previous two seasons combined, and his shooting percentage plummeted

Forbes did it again. Pumped for some of these guys.

Give me an Appleby, Daivien, Monsanto, Carr and Bradford lineup. Or that could easily be Ituka, Cam, McCray, Keller, Marsh. We have some pieces to work with and would assume Daivien comes back at this point and Jake is gone (which he should be if he’s anywhere close to top 20).

It must be asked - Could our first and second teams finish first and second in the ACC? JK

We should have been in the tourney regardless. Big Ten rode ESPN hype all the way to a huge amount of bids and then flamed out while the ACC was supposedly "down" and had what 6 teams in the Sweet 16 and 4 in the Elite 8. Let's stop bending over.

We didn’t make the tourney because the ACC was weak in regular season, not because of our play. Yes we screwed up our late opportunities but then the ACC and our NIT run invalidated the conference perception. Agree we could finish worse in conference next year and still make it in. So excited about the late signing rush this staff achieved. Don’t doubt them.

Forbes used the same basic formula for recruiting this year that he did last year. He recruited experienced players to fill out his starting lineup. Ituka and Appleby at guard. Carr and Bradford are the bigs. Monsanto is the experienced holdover at wing. With the exception of Ituka, all have at least two years of experience. An added bonus is that with the exception of Appleby, all have three years of eligibility remaining. Hildreth, McCray, Taylor and Marsh return with experience playing in Forbes system and eager for PT. They will also benefit from leading the newcomers into a new style of play. This should develop cohesion. Klintman and Keller get to watch and learn with a clear understanding they will be needed for frontcourt depth. The fact that every player besides Appleby has at least 3 years of eligibility remaining is by design. Forbes now has the pieces to develop an experienced, talented team without making wholesale roster changes every year. Big benefit.

The return of Davien Williamson and/or Jake Laravia is icing on the cake.

Nice

“Bending over” = losing to BC?

ACC performed better than B1G but did not have 6 in Sweet 16

Very well-stated. Forbes is quickly and effectively team building.

Think the OOC SOS was also a bad headline for us. Felt a little like the year the press dogged on Syracuse for not playing a true road game OOC and they went to the NIT. I expect that’s a “learning experience” for us and we see some positive adjustments when the 22-23 schedule is released.
