Hey dudes and dudettes:

Haven't been around here for a while, but you're still the best resource for travel recommendations around.

Looks like me and the wife may be headed to NYC this December. She's never been and we're trying to figure stuff out. What recommendations to y'all have for the following:

(1) Hotels, either because you know they're nice or because they are located well for touristy stuff? I'm thinking we wanna stay closer to Times Square area than somewhere else, but the ability to get around by subway without walking too far is key.

(2) Restaurants. We love to eat at cool places- hit me with your favorite places to eat a great meal that would be a good NYC experience, and I'll do what I can to get reservations.

(3) Attractions. Stuff we should we make sure that we hit. Tourist things should we make sure we make time for or should we avoid? And what broadway shows should we consider getting tickets to if we can at this point? Remember, it'll be Xmas time, so we're thinking ice-skating, tree viewing, etc.

Thanks for your help. I tried to search for an NYC recs thread, but couldn't easily find one. Hope it isn't repetitive (although I'm sure it is).

ELLIS

If it's still showing, see Anything Goes. Fantastic play and old school Broadway.

My wife and I are also going around the 21st and are staying on the lower east side. I have been several times, but she has not. We plan to see Wicked, have reservations for the Rockettes, and plan to go to Top of the Rock, Rockerfeller Plaza, FAO Schwartz, The Plaza, Orchard St., the Vietnamese section, and many others. It'll be fun but exhausting.

We went on the NBC Experience and that was fantastic. Got to see the sets of Jimmy Fallon, Morning Joe (MSNBC) and Sunday Night Football.

They hand out tickets at noon to see Jimmy's monologue rehearsal (3:50 PM) every day in the NBC store. Avoid Top of the Rock any time after noon.

Play three card monte...you'll pay for the trip.

Japonica is a real locals place in Soho.

See if you can get tickets to SNL.

If you feel like taking the train to Newark, the paella at Don Pepe's is great as are the homemade Portuguese sausages and sangria.

Don’t stay in Times Square unless you don’t mind crowds, it is so so crowded, all the time. If you want to be somewhere where you can get to Times Square easily, maybe find something near Columbus Circle? It’s just two stops away, right near the subway, and then you’re close to the park, if you like that sort of thing. (I do!)

Edit: Circle, not square. I don't know my shapes.

Yeah this is the best advice yet. Too many restaurant recs to name. Back 40 for brunch, Lovely Day for Indian/Thai, The Randolph for cocktails. Best city in the world. You can find anything you want.

My favorite spot in NYC is just cruising Central Park, more specifically the Belvedere Castle. Although you can also hit that at any time. Personally, I love cold weather walks and exploring.

Just go to The Standard, AKA my favorite place on Earth. Don't mind that it will be cold as balls in December, it will be worth it.

Also go to Dorrians on the UES if you wanna get mega-hammered and pick up chicks.

So Ellis don't do that.

if you're near dorrians, just go to molly's pitchers. used to be my pickup spot for babes.

Kunjip if you are into Korean food. You'll thank me later.

Bouchon Bakery in the Time Warner Center. If that's not enough Thomas Keller for you, head over to Per Se no problem.

Better to take the subway to Queens for Korean food. K-town is a little overrated. If you're in the Easy Village area, go to Sugar Sweet Sunshine and try the cupcakes and pudding. Are you more interested in local stuff, like good diners, or fancier places to go out?
