MTOW, Dan's Desire for Peace & Harmony

Here is my response to Dan (via FB):

Dan, I appreciate what you do, and I have followed your writing for years (including purchasing some of it); and, I know you have limited 'column inches' to take up with your musings, but this particular piece doesn't really reflect the source of the "hatred" and "vitriol" attributed to a segment of the fan-base. I think what steams most Wake fans (largely alumni in my experience, since I am an alumnus) is the seeming duplicity with which the AD has sold us a 'bill of goods' regarding [Redacted]'s hiring and retention. Culture? Winning? Historical competitiveness? At the core of these, and upon careful, thoughtful consideration, there must certainly be questions raised. Whether the manner in which they are raised or the fora in which they are purveyed are appropriate...or not...fails also to include the possibility that some folks feel like their trust in the AD/institution has been violated....and at the very least compromised. I don't know too many folk that will persist in a relationship like that. They'll either be passive and take it, or pursue some means to be heard out. I mean not to comment on whether their being "heard out" is appropriate or inappropriate. That's all pretty subjective anyway. The complaints are a voice for change, and those expressing them are entitled to it. Do you think that the AD has been as forthcoming as it might be ...as *he* could be? Is it reasonable to think that some people might get rankled when they perceive a slight or some insult to their intelligence?

What if Codi keeps playing well through the ACC season this year, blows up on the national scene and ends up going pro?

I don't think that will happen, but just like Jeff Teague he would have entered Wake with plans to stay and got good enough to leave and did so when he had the opportunity. I can't imagine why you would be against this. It's an arbitrary cut off. If someone is wearing a Wake jersey I'm pulling for them - be it one game or four years.

Teague had elite athleticism and a killer first step. Codi is athletic, but not quite at an elite level. He will end up as at least a three year player, but I get your point.

Looking at it objectively on paper (as both me & Ron Wellman must do since we weren't there), I just do not understand why Skip Brown's jersey is retired instead of Frank Johnson's.

depends how you weight length of career and contribution, for instance......

CP3 > Chill as a player but Chill's WF career >>>>>>> CP3's WF career

In college , Chill was better as a player than CP3

LOL...Grobe is gone so we need a new person to hate. Have to keep at least three people associated with Wake on the Hate list at all times. Sorry Dan, you are #3 for now. When Bzzz is gone I nominate Ed Christman. What kind of jerk-off goes around without any pigment? Then Ed Wilson. Poetry sucks, a-hole! Is there anything about Wake our esteemed fans on this board actually like?

Just look at Dan 's new book. Then look at the WFU record books. Then consider the 76-77 season . It's not even close. Skip was a slam dunk.

The 76-77 team won 2 of its final 7 games. It is not one of the best two teams in school history. A team that loses 3 straight to lose the regular season race it led and then gets upset by the worst team in the ACC in the first round of the tournament is not the best team in school history.

94-95 won 12 straight games before getting upset by Oklahoma State one round earlier than the 76-77 team, and they tied for the league regular season and won the ACCT. Better team, better overall accomplishments.

95-96 finished 2nd, won the ACCT and made it as far as 76-77 with its PG injured in the NCAAT. Better team, better overall accomplishments.

I would go

61-62
94-95
60-61
95-96
76-77
83-84

I thought the only real discussion of best team was between the two teams Duncan was a part of his junior/senior year and the 2005 team.

1962 may be in the running because they made the Final Four, but they were almost certainly not the best Wake team ever.

I think the 2005 team is likely the best team in Wake history.

Hard for me to put 2005 in that category without any hardware. 1 postseason win?

To be considered among the best teams in school history, you should have to win when it counts.

Well I guess there are two different types of "best" team. The team that has the most accomplishments overall and then the team which is overall the most complete team. It's hard to compare across generations because the teams now would destroy teams from the pre-80s (for the most part). That team in 2005 could have easily won the national championship. I think there are only a few teams in Wake history we can say that about. If the 2009 team had peaked in March like they did in January they would have hoisted the trophy. There was no question in mid-January of that year that Wake was the best team in the nation.

You are so bad at trolling. Read more BKF. The man is a KING.

If you think the 2005 was the best team in WF history (and I think it probably had the most talent of any team in WF history)....and that team got beat in the very first weekend of the NCAA Tournament (as well as the first round of the ACC Tournament)....what does that say about the coaching of that team?

Doesn't necessarily say anything about it. That's sample size one game.

Yes, that was only one game.....but in his entire career, he never won a single post-season game against a better-seeded team, when his team was not favored to win. Not one single game. That's a pretty good sample size, wouldn't you think?

This is not true. He coached before Wake, bro.

Well we were playing without one of the top 5 players in Wake history in the ACC Tournament game. And no, Skip Prosser by no means has a large sample size or even a "good" sample size. Looks like he coached somewhere around 15 games in the tournament. 15 is not a large size for anything.

ETA: I really don't think there's much emotion involved. That Wake team was almost certainly a top three team in Wake history. You can argue that other teams won more "when it mattered" at the end of the year, but the 2005 team was very damn good.
