So as I said earlier in my hammock thread: I am moving into a new place and looking to make some investments in some nice things. One of these is a new television. I have never been in the market since the concept of flat screens became the standard. As a result, I am looking to you, The Pit, for some advice. What do you believe is a good television I could get for around a 1000? I know that limits me but it is what i can afford. Thanks in advance for the advice.

I have a Samsung and an LG. I'm very happy with both. Can find good models for both under $1,000.

i got a 46 inch sharp aquos lcd 1080p that is pretty bomb. it was like 14 or 1500 hundred when i got it but that was like 3 years ago.

I am sure 94Deac can help you out with this one.

I gots me a 13-inch RCA black and white. Takes a while for it to come on and lately it seems ain't nuthin' on but static. But it beats watchin' the kitchen flies fuck.

I got this for about $1200 five months ago and love it. I'm sure you could find it for less now.

HD TVs have really dropped in price recently. I don't say flat screens because, honestly, I haven't seen a tv in a store that wasn't a flat screen in a few years. Depending on the size you're looking for, you can easily stay under $1000. I just bought a 47" Sanyo this weekend for $550. Honestly, there's not a huge advantage between brands. Just make sure you get one that has 1080 (i or p) and stay away form the 720s. I'd recommend figuring out what size you want or what the max size you can fit is. I went with the 47 since nothing bigger would have fit in the entertainment center. Once you know the size, just visit a few stores like Best Buy, Wal-Mart, etc and walk around looking at what they have to offer in that size. they usually have things playing on the screens so you can see the picture quality and how it compares to other tvs.

i bought a shitty 42 inch dynex. It was $400 and despite it's miserable black levels, it's 1080p and serves every purpose that I need it for (videogames, streaming starcraft and mlb.tv from my laptop, and serving as a good friend in times of sexual drought :jerkit:).

I'm sorry, but this is terrible advice, especially if you are buying your main TV and you care about quality at all. There is a large difference between 1080i and 1080p, especially if you are playing blu-rays. They are large differences in quality between brands. You should be picking the size of the TV based on the viewing distance away from it. Walking around stores is an awful way to judge quality, as they screw with the settings to try to sell certain TVs.

Honestly, if you invest the time, the Internet is a great reference. Especially if you narrow it down to a couple models, you can always find comparison reviews.

I love my Panasonic Plasma. I bought the 2011 42" non-3d version a few weeks ago and have been very, very happy with it.

Personally, I would buy Samsung, LG, Sony, Sharp or Panasonic. Stay away from everything else.

I really love my 37" Samsung LCD with 1080p (at least it was advertised that way). Had it about a year and a half now. It's a great set.

Once you find one check amazon and other online retailers for price. I got my 55 inch for 1200 and it was 2k+ everywhere else.

Depends on what you are looking to watch with it. A high refresh rate (240+) works well with fast moving images of sports, so that is a good feature to look for if you want to watch a lot of sports. Contrast ratios are also good indicators. The brand does matter and you get what you pay for.

A good place to view tvs (if you want an actual store) is an upscale audio/video store. They'll normally have a decent selection of TVs and all of them will be optimized normally. And lastly, what looks good to one person might not look good to another so get something you like. And buy online, it'll be cheaper, no tax and free shipping (probably).

This, but Vizio has amazing ratings as well. Definitely look at them too.
