Danny effing Manning, unbelievable.
Danny effing Manning, unbelievable.
Does anyone else think that it is bizarre (or perhaps ironic) that we are pursuing a head coaching candidate that is simultaneously negotiating with his current school for a relaxing of academic standards for incoming recruits? Maybe this also says something about why other candidates may be turning us down.
From the Tulsa newspaper:
"Believed to have been among additional Manning-TU discussion topics were salary increases for assistant coaches and academic reform.
The academic issue centers on recruiting and sustaining eligibility. If Manning and Hurricane football coach Bill Blankenship are expected to compete for championships in the American Athletic Conference, there is a question whether TU — without compromising its status as an elite academic institution —— would be willing to make adjustments in standards for football and basketball.
The result could be a deeper pool of athletes from which Manning and Blankenship could recruit, thereby placing Hurricane teams in a position to compete with better numbers of difference-making athletes."
Technology has allowed the fans to scoop the hire before any of the "insiders" like Goodman, Borzello, or Parrish.

In the bottom tier category with Gregory. I'd move Brownell to the middle tier. Great fucking job, Ron. Another bottom tier coach.Where does Manning rank? Even a reasonable best case scenario? Somewhere around Larranaga/Hamilton?
K
Pitino
Roy
Boeheim
Buzz Williams
Tony Bennett
Dixon
Gottfried
Brey
Larranaga
Hamilton
Brownell
Gregory
Could he suit up for us next year?

He hasn't coached a single game in the ACC for us yet, it's not really fair to rank him at this point..
It's hard to know where he really is though since he only has two years under his belt.
As of right now the tiers IMO are:
K
Boeheim
Pitino
Roy
Bennett
Dixon
Williams
Larranaga
Brey
Hamilton
Gottfried
Brownell
Gregory
Manning
Insert BC Coach Here, who will almost assuredly suck
It's also not fair to rank him in the middle tier with guys who have won ACC championships and Coach of the Year awards, as some suggested. Bottom tier as of now.He hasn't coached a single game in the ACC for us yet, it's not really fair to rank him at this point..
That's a turbo prop plane. Those are still pretty fast
My take from what I've heard in the last 24 hours:
Smart - There is no way we could have thrown more at him. We had pretty much any famous alum we could think of call him. We pandered to his wife. None of it worked. In the end, they didn't want to be here.
We contacted (in no particular order) and got rejected by: Marshall, Miller, Howland, Amaker. I'm honestly not sure how much of that info to believe, because I think Wellman wants to leak an impressive list so we all know he tried.
This search feels like 2010 all over again. We got told no by every big name we approached and eventually had to settle. Ron Wellman has now had 2 major hoops searches in 4 years and has struck out on pretty much every single name he's gone after. At a certain point we need to accept that our program isn't as attractive as we all think, and I believe the prospect of working for Ron Wellman is a major part of it.
The billboard money better be spent welcoming Manning. We all know Wellman shit the bed and needs to go, but it's time to turn the corner after the last 4 years. [Redacted] was an obviously flawed hire from day 1 and never deserved a shot IMO. I feel the opposite about Manning. He deserves a shot. It's not the best hire, but at least this time I don't feel confident we will be a miserable failure the way I did with [Redacted].
