Official Hoops Coaching Search Thread - Welcome Danny Manning!!!

A few posters have a repetitive, weird, total inability to see Manning's entire profile, which includes his personality, playing background, assistant coaching experience, and limited head coaching success. They just lop off one aspect of his resume and claim that's all people care about.

What in the hell is this post?

So basically, we are getting Wojo with more NBA experience and less actual coaching experience...

Why didn't we call just Frank Johnson, or Muggsy?

How do you figure? He has two years as a head coach and won hsi conference regular season and tournament.

So I'm standing on a trade show floor in Vancouver with a KU grad who thinks Manning is a great choice for Wake. He said that Manning was the best liked assistant under Self and had an obvious close relationship with his players. Do I think Manning is the answer, no, but he is an upgrade from the last 4 years

Herpes would be an upgrade from the last 4 years.

Congrats on your small time loser mentality. VT got a much better hire than us. You could not have been more wrong on how this would go down.

I can relate, but VT didn't just get a much better coach than us, they bested Marquette's replacement coach and likely BC as well. VT got really, really fortunate with the circumstances. Sucks, but it is what it is.

One night I was at Yonkers Raceway. A guy had a fistful of tickets. He dropped one. I picked it up and yelled at him. He didn't turn around. He had bet an exacta with a horse that had come in last in each of its last eight races. Damn if that exacta didn't come in and pay $212.

I was blindly likely. VT was blindly lucky.

We have an attractive job with a very unattractive AD. I've been openly and loudly Wellmanout for nearly two years. He's our biggest liability.

I would be more concerned with Buzz Williams if I thought there was any chance that Wake would have been interested in him as our next head coach.

OK - where do you see this?

Is it the #72 finish on kenpom?
The fact that he won one of the shittiest mid-major conferences in D1?
The 23-point loss to Wichita State?
The 17-point loss to UCLA in the NCAA Tournament?
The fact that he's recruited one consensus three-star player at Tulsa?
The fact that only two players on his roster saw significant statistical increases between years one and two?
The fact that the only guy he recruited to KU by himself was Perry Ellis (who, let's face it, wasn't going anywhere)?
The fact that his mobility up the Kansas bench took curiously long despite his supposed credentials?

His resume sucks. S-U-C-K-S.

I'm done with hope. This is rock bottom.

It's time to #ManUp, but #WellmanOut. Off with his fucking head.

All of this. For some reason, people have this belief that great player = great coach. There is little evidence to support that, and much evidence to the contrary.

the #donks and #filths are losing their MINDS!

bdz, I think there's enough on his resume outside of the name to think he could be a good coach. If he stuck around at Tulsa, he'd have an excellent team next year and an even better team the following year. Tulsa fans seem to like him, which I think is a really important proxy for coaching ability. And he's gotten a lot of praise as a big man coach working under Self.

He has two commits for 2014. One had offers from Oklahoma, UTEP, Texas Tech, USF and Houston. The other had offers from FSU, Vandy and USF.

And yet certain posters cannot fathom the possibility that he could succeed at his next stop as well. It's a "fact."

Dude. You're using two seasons as HC (his best was #72 kenpom) and a TON of speculation about what he actually did at KU to substantiate this point. Your "facts" are just as tenuous as other "facts."

Versus the coach you wanted who got run out of LA and alienated almost the AAU coaches whom he had come in contact with. You wanted who was paid $3.5M to go away.

Wait, someone paid Howland 3.5MM to go away? This I gotta hear.

Thank you for refusing to be LOWF.

How much does it matter, though? I'm not saying it doesn't matter. I'm actually saying it's the major reason why he's considered a good potential hire. So let's debate it.

Or we can do what we did with the Buzz hire and talk ourselves into it purely because he's "DANNY MANNING!!"

I don't think that people are doing what they did with [Redacted], but maybe I'm just speaking for myself because I was vehemently anti-[Redacted] from day one and I'm fine with Manning even though I don't believe it's the best hire we could have made.

Because Wojo has been coaching in an elite program for years alongside one of the winningest coaches ever. Manning has coached at Kansas for a couple of years and at Tulsa a couple of years. Wojo has more and better coaching experience.

Is anyone else going to enjoy rooting for Shaka Smart to fall on his ass now?

Luck has ZERO to do with landing a strong HC.

Anyway, here is hoping Manning is with Sir Charles et al Saturday and Monday wearing black and gold. Being a former NBA player and RW the head of the Selection Committee etc., I suspect there is a very good chance he will be. I hope.
