Official Hoops Coaching Search Thread - Welcome Danny Manning!!!

OK - where do you see this?

Is it the #72 finish on kenpom?
The fact that he won one of the shittiest mid-major conferences in D1?
The 23-point loss to Wichita State?
The 17-point loss to UCLA in the NCAA Tournament?
The fact that he's recruited one consensus three-star player at Tulsa?
The fact that only two players on his roster saw significant statistical increases between years one and two?
The fact that the only guy he recruited to KU by himself was Perry Ellis (who, let's face it, wasn't going anywhere)?
The fact that his mobility up the Kansas bench took curiously long despite his supposed credentials?

His resume sucks. S-U-C-K-S.

I'm done with hope. This is rock bottom.

It's time to #ManUp, but #WellmanOut. Off with his fucking head.

Because Wojo has been coaching in an elite program for years alongside one of the winningest coaches ever. Manning has coached at Kansas for a couple of years and at Tulsa a couple of years. Wojo has more and better coaching experience.

Manning had nine years at Kansas.

How so? It's indicative of the loser mentality that has taken hold with some of you. If you disagree, oh well.

Jesus Christ, man. You've been King Pout through this whole process. Put the razor blades down, wipe away the emo tears, and remember that "LOWF" stands for "Little Ole' Wake Forest." It stands for caring about trying more than winning. It stands for fretting over politeness. It stands for being a small school in the midst of three other bigger schools, and somehow always being those fanbase's second favorite team.

Stockholm Syndrome? Loser mentality? Victim gaze? All these Psych 101 terms you keep projecting upon LOWF aren't the same thing, no matter how much you may want it to be otherwise, no matter how many times you post that it is. Exactitude matters. Be exact in your criticism.

Is anyone else going to enjoy rooting for Shaka Smart to fall on his ass now?

Why? He just keeps turning everyone down. He apparently likes it at VCU, or he promised the administration he wouldn't leave if they hired him as 30 something HC. Does anyone root against Mark Few because he stayed at Gonzaga? Why?

I don't think that people are doing what they did with [Redacted], but maybe I'm just speaking for myself because I was vehemently anti-[Redacted] from day one and I'm fine with Manning even though I don't believe it's the best hire we could have made.

There was a whole lot of rationalization with the Buzz hire. Poll people in 2014 what they thought about Buzz circa maybe June 2010 and I bet you'd have like 90% of people saying they were vehemently BuzzOUT from the start. That's revisionist. People were pretty BuzzWAIT across the board once the initial shock of the bizarre hire wore off.

Exactly.

Same reason people pull for Childress to be the coach...or Larue...or Muggsy.

Name =/= coaching ability

What? Rusty and Childress had never been head coaches anywhere in CBB before where as Manning has. Yeah it was a short 2 years but at least he has been a head coach. Childress never even coached as an assistant anywhere prior to being here and Rusty was a coach at a D3 school and HS before getting on staff. Nowhere close to being comparable.

This is a joke hire, all after we were fed the BS that Hatch and Wellman were "swinging for the fences" and "coaching search was going well." This hire completes the process of rendering Wake Forest basketball a basket case.

This will be Wellman's legacy. The destruction of our flagship athletic program.

Read the "NBA playing experience is all people are seeing in Manning" sideshow from the last 5-6 pages. Even better, don't.

I just thought you'd be above arguing with a straw man. The "facts" are "facts." Taking away largely blind speculation and projections based on speculation, Manning is an objectively bad hire for a school of Wake's caliber.

Do I hope he succeeds? Hell yeah.

Does his resume offer anything to suggest that he'll succeed? You can't base anything off of two years, IMO.

Yeah that's why I clarified and said maybe I'm just viewing through my lens.

Please help me understand what that means. I must not be reading that right.

Dude. You're using two seasons as HC (his best was #72 kenpom) and a TON of speculation about what he actually did at KU to substantiate this point. Your "facts" are just as tenuous as other "facts."

You may have jumped in after my post a few pages back, but I laid out my thoughts on the positives and obvious risks of Manning. The positives were was more than you mentioned above, or else I wouldn't be behind the potential hire.

If Manning comes is there any way we get his recruits? I'm sure Scott Wilbekin's brother would be better than Rondale Watson.

hoopla has already been proven wrong even if you ignore everything in the past. Just yesterday he said the BOT was going to meet at some point today to see whether they'd approve Manning. Instead a flight left today at the crack of dawn with an offer already having been extended either yesterday or very early this morning before any fictional meeting.

Both of you are just pissed cause I've got the #swagger and #mojo and you got #scooped. There wasn't an offer on the plate when reported. Meetings don't just consist of sitting in a conference room or campus tours. Do you think the plane is going to Tulsa to have tea? I knew there was a meeting of some sort being planned. I called it and was right. #SorryI'mNotSorry that I was accurate once again. Do yourself a favor and stop trying to defame me because as you know, #ICan'tAndWillNotBeSilenced!!!!

Nice derp picture choice.

Good points. Where was the post listing the players that Manning and the various other assistants at KU recruited? That to mee was the most damning of all.

This is my feeling now. I can live with Manning. I'm just disappointed we didn't get Shaka, Marshall, or Archie, and not real happy with Wellman, but I guess he tried. His legacy now depends on the next few years with Clawson and Manning.

We could have had Ben Howland, but I guess two Final Four trips, multiple Sweet 16s and success in two big-time conferences ruled him out. Wellman is utterly incompetent.

Long time lurker and '99 grad. If you had asked me a few weeks ago what type of coach I hoped we would hire, I would have dreamed of Shaka but realistically thought we should go for an up-and-comer with the potential to be great. If we had gotten Shaka I would have been ecstatic but that never seemed like a real possibility until the leaks about "swinging for the fences" and such. Now it feels like such a disappointment to get Manning, but he is exactly the type of coach (not necessarily him specifically, but he is in the same league with several others) I thought we should go after a few weeks ago. So after getting over the disappointment of artificially raised expectations not being met, I will be happy with Manning and hope he can turn us around and build us into the program I know we can be. He can't do any worse that [Redacted], that's for sure.
