Summer Football Practice

It isn't. But it's what we've been talking about on this thread.

Funny to me how so many are ready to dismiss Cameron as competent QB based upon a couple of scrimmages when learning an entirely new system and also when defense is always ahead of offense. When Cameron was coming out of HS, many raved about his ability to throw and run and swearing that WF got a steal. Now, the Wolford and Smith are the flavor of the month, and there is no hope for Cameron (or Sousa). After a slow start in an entirely new environment, many here will also throw one or both of Smith and Wolford under the bus. Playing QB at the D-1 level is hard. Except for very few, it takes a long time and age/experience matter. Amazing how people just do not get that.

What has Cameron accomplished over the last 3 years? Has he ever played well? Could we win with him tomorrow? Has he improved at all since HS? This goes back to Grobes lack of player development problem, but the results are that Cameron couldn't beat out a back-up WR and take the starting job that is sitting on a silver platter.

People get that. People get that with a long time, age, and experience, Cameron and Sousa don't look like capable ACC starters.

This isn't a QB thing in my opinion. It is an OL thing and run game. How the OL progresses will determine the success of the QB. Anyone who watched Wake Forest the last couple of years saw a brutal OL. As a Soph with an older OL, Price was very good. With a young and injured line he took some hits and it affected him. Sousa and Cameron need protection and a run game. Without it, Jon Gruden couldn't move the chains offensively.

Jax, Its not a matter of only one problem for the offense. Having giant OTs trying to cut block last year was a disaster. But if we get a running game going, can our QB do his part to get the passing game going? That's what we were talking about.

Don't disagree with the importance of a credible OL> But there are skills and factors that need to be there the decision making, arm strength touch, footwork, throwing mechanics and vision among others that you need to have when you have time back there- I think Cameron and Sousa are suspect. They should be showing a whole lot more than they are even with the new system. We need to upgrade QB in hurry and it seems we are recruiting that way. To agree with you, I have always argued that Grolobo ruined Price. And just to be pilloried and shamed with an unpopular opinion- they ruined Josh Harris too. Both came in with a lot of talent and potential.

We get that Cameron got outclassed in the scrimmages by a guy that was a wide receiver last year and the prior staff had totally given up on as a QB and keep in mind that Sousa didn't look great either, but was still a lot better than Cameron in all of the spring scrimmages.

Comparing the performance of previous true freshman to this year with the rule changes is like comparing apples to oranges. Some of the things that are most difficult for a true freshman to grasp can now be addressed for 8 weeks prior to the first fall practice. I have great confidence in coach Clawson and coach Ruggiero. They both know how to put the kids in a position to succeed.

While the offensive line, running game and the receiving corps will have a lot to do with how well the freshman do I expect a true freshman starter by week three. My money is on Travis Smith. I know how hard he works and what he is capable of. That being said... I think Travis Smith and John Wolford are two of the most overlooked QB's in the country. There are some serious flaws in the way kids are rated. Both of these guys for different reasons are underrated. Too much of the process is weighted on the number and quality of offers a kid receives. If a kid is a solid commit early they rarely move up the rankings no matter how well they do their Sr. year. In Travis' case being injured in the state championship game his junior year kept him from throwing during that key recruiting period. His ranking and his offers both stalled even though he tore it up again his Sr. year.

Take a minute at the beginning of this video to read all the awards he compiled this year. I'm not the only one who expects great things out of Travis Smith.

Cameron played against the 1st team D and Sousa played against the 2nd team D. The comparison is not apt. If Sousa is the best QB, he should start.

True until Clawson switched them in the Spring Game and Sousa played against the 1st team D.

From reading this board, it sounds like Cameron suffered a pretty bad shoulder injury and never really recovered.

Regardless of what D Sousa was up against. I think it was clear he simply outplayed Cameron.

As for next year, may the best man win. Whether that is an 18 year old "man" or a 22 year old man.

Where are Travis Smith's high school receivers going to college? Those dudes can catch the ball.

Hard to believe the guy from michigan never lost a game. Crazy.

Saginaw Valley State, Northern Michigan and Adrian College. The fourth one was Jake Smith (So.). He will be the QB next year.

Absolutely. Jones ended up playing against GT that year (Tech was a bowl team) due to injuries to Stachitas and Price, and Jones played reasonably well as GT needed a TD pass from Jamar Nesbitt with 15 seconds left to win. WF would not have been any worse with Jones playing QB than Price.

LOL. No.

Well I do think we would have had the same record in 2010, but the point is that in 2011 Tanner threw for 20 TD's and only had 6 INTs while putting up a 132.8 rating on the year and I think that's due in large part to his experience playing as a freshman. The argument isn't if we are going to be bad with these QB's, we most assuredly are with any of them, the argument is that playing a true freshman this year could get invaluable experience leading into the next three years.

I do see both sides though that he could be a redshirt freshman and then have four years, but there's no telling what would have happened from there.
