JA Adande weighs in on the Spurs legacy.

SAN ANTONIO -- All of a sudden the San Antonio Spurs don't seem so simple anymore. They're the 2014 NBA champions, sure, but their significance is far broader. By thoroughly dismantling the Miami Heat in five games, by winning their fifth championship since Tim Duncan and Gregg Popovich got this thing going in 1999, they're forcing us to recalibrate our definition of a superteam and to rearrange the hierarchy of modern great franchises in the NBA and all of sports.
They're the best NBA team since Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls in the 1990s. Yes, the Los Angeles Lakers have also won five championships in the time since Jordan finally dropped his shooting hand at the finish of the 1998 Finals. But the Spurs get the edge in continuity and longevity -- "the span," as Duncan kept calling it. The Spurs have made the playoffs for 17 consecutive years. They've won at least 50 regular-season games in every one of those years except 1999, when the lockout shortened the entire season to 50 games.

Duncan and Popovich have two more championships than the Tom Brady-Bill Belichick New England Patriots. And while Derek Jeter and the New York Yankees have as many championship rings as Tim Duncan, dating back to 2006, Jeter has also had more managers and has reached the World Series only once since 2003.

Not to be lost in the glory of Tim winning his 5th title is Shane Battier's line from his final game as an NBA player:

11 minutes, 0 points, 1 steal, 1 TO, and 2 fouls (I believe 1 charge and 1 block).

I think the Battier foul on Manu fired up the Spurs and the crowd. Think it was 22-9 Heat at the time.

Also, props to Duncan's gf for keeping him happy during the season.

him wrestling around with Manu could actually be considered the turning point of the game. Manu did pretty well after that.

Agreed. Spo thought he might get Game 7 Battier last night. That was one of my big takeaways. Last year, Spo went toe-to-toe with the master. This year, he was grasping at straws.

Yes, it was glorious.

A Facebook friend reminded me of the only downside of the Spurs win. Another Hole got a championship.

No Shane Battier or Derek Fisher next year. There is a God. Thank you Jesus (i.e., Patty Mills)

Meh. You will see and hear a lot more about Fisher in '14-'15 than you did in '13-'14. Hell, probably the same for Battier since he is with ESPN.

Don't feel like Pop ran circles around Spo or anything, the Spurs players just balled out. The Heat outside of Lebron looked like shit.

Agreed. If you want to compare the coaches, it should be on a macro level. The Spurs' entire 13-14 campaign was a coaching adjustment after losing it all last year. Pop pulled the right strings all year to put them in a position to dominate; Spo didn't. Checkmate.

Pop/Spurs organization are on the cutting edge of regular season minutes management as well.

Looks like you've been assimilated, bro.

Pop has had some well-publicized events around managing regular season minutes: DNP-old age for Robert Horry years ago and more recently for Duncan. Also, last year the Spurs got fined for sending the Big 3 home before their game at Miami. IIRC, the Spurs were in that game in the final minute.
He definitely ramped it up this year though, with no starter averaging over 30 minutes a game. 1st time that's happened since the NBA/ABA merger in the 70s.

Definitely this.

A Big Three (with two of the big three looking exceedingly small) is nothing compared to a Big Eight, or Nine, or Ten, or whatever the Spurs were running out there.
