World Cup Knockout Rounds Thread (USMNT THREAD!) (nwt)

@billbarnwell: Ref missed a deliberate handball in the box but had no problem spotting dissent from 40 yards away.

Question for those who know more about soccer. What effect would moving the penalty kick spot back have on penalties and the game?

To me it seems like the punishment for fouling in the box and the reward for getting fouled is way to large. The likelihood that Robben and the Netherlands turn that possession into a goal if he hadn't been fouled or if it wasn't called is WAY lower than the likelihood that they can convert a PK. It seems pretty disproportionate to me. When I think about basketball, getting fouled, you jump from about 50% to 65% (player with 50% FG and 80% FT, who has to make two free throws in a row) if it's a shooting foul, depending on the player, etc.

In a game as low scoring as soccer, a penalty gives one team a huge advantage. I know there should be a big disincentive for fouling in the box and a big incentive for getting into the box (note: not getting fouled in the box, not flopping), but this seems out of balance. Would moving the spot back make any difference? Would it change the game way too much?

pk's are not a gimme. the Chile vs Brazil yesterday showed that.

Not a gimme, but conversion rate is like ~75%. What's the success rate for any plays inside the box?

Comparing regular FT's to Penalty kicks is not close to being a like for like comparison.

It's more like Technical FT's vs Penalties, which work out to about the same conversion rate as penalties which some seem to be bitching about being "too easy".

Overall the league is shooting FT's as follows:

.792 Technical FT's
.744 Non-Technical FT's

This actually is something of a surprise in that we would have expected the Technical% to be higher. Most units should have a .800+ free throw shooter among the five, and when you factor in the Billups, Ray Allen, Dirk Nowitzki types we would have guessed it would have been .825 or better.

Greece gives up a goal and somehow gets more defensive. Proud of you Greece.

Duarte knew he was going to be sent off before his butt even hit the grass. Stupid challenge when already on a booking.

He was on far side of field and only saw defenders head and back. I know I didnt see it in real time. Looked like a header

I didn't see where he was positioned, but the defenders arm was outstretched parallel to the endline. It should have been obvious from any angle except the tv angle I would think, unless he was actually even with the defender on the far side.

And now Duarte is sent off. Was that straight red or did he give the 2nd yellow?

I guess i was referring to linesman, who was on far side. Tv missed it to. Dont know where referee was
