Chicago Cubs Thread - Playoff Push Pending

Lackey has given up at least 1 run in all 4 innings. Solid work.

Also, just saw the Red have given up 150 HR this year - the record is like 261 - they are going to blow by that.

Heyward has the worst slugging percentage of anyone in the lineup not named Lackey and the worst OBP of anyone other than Baez. I hope Madden keeps him in the 7 or 8 spot for a bit.

The weird thing is, the last 30 days or so, he hasn't been that bad, he just had a horrendous april/may

Joel Peralta was DFA to make room on the roster for Adam Warren, who started for the Cubs this afternoon. Cubs lead 2-1 after 3 innings. David Ross was placed on the 7 day concussion DL after taking a ball off the face mask yesterday. Tommy LaStella was recalled from a rehab assignment at Iowa.

As much as I respect Montero's ability to call a game and frame pitches, his playing time will likely be limited. His bat has been missing and he is 2 for 41 throwing out runners. The early leads the Cubs have been able to achieve most of the season have limited the running game of the opposition. The recent struggles of the Cub starters and lack of consistent run production have allowed Cub opponents to start running and it's been ugly. I hope Miggy can turn things around.

Today's good news. Adam Warren pitches five innings of one run baseball in his spot start.
Today's bad news. Everything else. Cubs lose 5-3.

Our bullpen is terrible right now, I cant remember the last time they didn't give up a run.

Travis Wood and Carl Edwards retired eight straight Mets in relief of Arrieta on 7/2/16 in a 4-3 loss. The last quality start was by John Lackey on 6/30 against the Mets. Maddon yanked him in the 7th with one on and one out. Joel Peralta promptly surrendered the lead and the victory. The Cubs are 1-6 since that move. The last time the bullpen protected a lead was for Hendricks on 6/29.

Some losses are more damaging than others. My fear then and now is that the loss on 6/30 was a loss of that nature.

Team is similar to the Pinella team that was swept by the Dodgers. The strikeouts + bad BP = early exit.

Lose 2/3 to the Reds and now a loss to the Braves. 2 on no one out and doesn't bunt over in the 11th -- AR hits into a DP. Maddon has cost the Cubs 2 games in the past week with horrific managment. He needs the AS break as much as the players.

Guys, calm down, its all a plan to let everyone else catch up and then BOOOOOOOM - we play even worse.

Cubs demonstrate why they have lost eight of their last nine games and have gone 5-14 since Dexter Fowler was placed on the DL. Poor pitching, poor fielding and poor hitting result in an 8-4 loss to the Pirates. That covers every phase of the game. They have been outscored 62-36 during the past nine games and 111-84 since Fowler left. Remove the three home victories against the Reds and the run differential is 99-57. Lester and Lackey need to come up huge if this team hopes to win before the All Star break.

Lester shelled in 2nd straight outing despite being given 2 run lead to start game. I'd be more than a little worries at this point as top 3 starters are 30+ with Lackey being 37. Gonna have to trade some of the top prospects for a front line starter if anyone will part with one.

Wonder if Theo & company are looking at Julio Teheran? He is 25 and way better than his record with Braves.

Cubs defeat the Pirates 6-5. Lackey recovered from a rough early start and the bullpen was effective. Szczur hit a 410 foot double to lead off the 8th and Bryant followed with a single for the GWRBI in the eighth. The All Star game gives most of the team some rest and a much needed opportunity to regroup. Hopefully, Fowler will return Friday.

Teheran will cost more than we are willing to give up.

Not covered here, but Rizzo is on fire - 4 more hits today.
