F is for Fascism (Ferguson MO)

Wait...do y'all mean to tell me that being black in America is a problem?

Wow, who knew?!?!?

CNN has helpfully provided a TL;DR summary of the Baltimore report here: http://www.cnn.com/2016/08/09/us/baltimore-justice-department-report/index.html

BPD stops African-American drivers and pedestrians at disproportionate rates, subjecting them to greater rates of searches than whites, the report said, creating racial disparities at every stage of law enforcement actions, from stop to arrest, the report said.
"These racial disparities, along with evidence suggesting intentional discrimination, erode the community trust that is critical to effective policing."
Among the investigation's findings:
• African-Americans accounted for 95% of 410 individuals stopped at least 10 times from 2010 to 2016
One African-American man in his 50s was stopped 30 times in less than four years; none of the stops resulted in a citation or criminal charge

I mean, if you are that 50-something year old black man, how can you possibly have any faith left that the police department is interested in protecting you as opposed to just hassling you? It's hard for me to imagine a middle-class white person being stopped 30 times in their entire life.

The scariest part of this is this is exactly the type of policing many white residents want because it makes them feel safe.

They scarier thing is that you can swap out "BPD" with the initials of hundreds of police departments in the country and it would be the same report. We are provided an abundance of evidence and we sit idle.

I'm not sure, but good lord:

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. — A woman was shot to death during a “shoot or don’t shoot” training exercise Tuesday at the Punta Gorda Police Academy, according to police.

Punta Gorda Police Chief Tom Lewis said the woman was “mistakenly struck with a live round” during a Citizens Academy scenario designed to simulate the use of lethal force. It’s not clear how the apparent fatal ammunition mix-up occurred.

The woman, identified as Mary Knowlton, was randomly selected to participate in the exercise as roughly 35 people watched.

She was shot multiple times during a role play exercise in which the officer pretended to be the “bad guy,” with Knowlton playing the victim, a photographer covering the event told the Charlotte Sun.

Knowlton was rushed to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The Citizens Academy is designed to teach local civics to civilians who apply for the eight-week course, according to Punta Gorda’s official website.

Chief Tom Lewis said in a statement, “I am devastated for everyone involved in this unimaginable event. If you pray, please pray for Mary’s family, and for the officers who were involved. Everyone involved in this accident is in a state of overwhelming shock and grief.”

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

See the full Punta Gorda Police Department statement below:

On Aug. 9, 2016, the Punta Gorda Police Department hosted approximately 35 civilians from the community for a two hour Citizen Police Academy, during which time two participants were randomly selected to be put through a “shoot/don’t shoot” scenario in which they make decisions on using simulated lethal force in a live role play.

During the first scenario, participant Mary Knowlton was struck with a live round and was fatally injured. She was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Chief Tom Lewis stated, “I am devastated for everyone involved in this unimaginable event. If you pray, please pray for Mary’s family, and for the officers who were involved. Everyone involved in this accident is in a state of overwhelming shock and grief.”

Chief Tom Lewis contacted the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to respond and begin an investigation into the events surround the incident. The involved officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of this investigation. Florida Department of Law Enforcement personnel are now on scene and have taken command of the investigation.

The Punta Gorda Police Department realizes the community has many question about this incident. We also must take great care to not jeopardize the investigation. As the investigation continues and more information is available we, will release it.

I'm guessing the fake rounds feel/sound the same as the live rounds. But why was the "victim" shot at? worst shooting gallery players ever

Meh... There is a difference between being anti PC, and attacking someone personally because you disagree with their political opinions. I don't really care because I do the same shit sometimes, but it seems a lot of you guys are unaware you are being bullies and assholes.

this is so rich coming from this clown of a poster

I guess they feel and sound the same to the shooter, but the sound of the woman screaming in pain is different.

But the real question is definitely why some cop needed to pull the trigger or even use a real gun in a role playing exercise.

I still don't quite understand what the objective of the exercise was...

Sounds like one of those cop propaganda things where they bring in citizens to show how hard it is to make shoot or don't shoot decisions.

I don't care if you think you are shooting blank rounds or not. You should never point a gun at someone and pull the trigger without leathal intent.

Somebody needs to be held accountable for this shit.

Elsewhere in the article it says she was hit by "a" live round. I obviously don't know which is correct but would guess it was the singular. At least I hope it was.

what if you're in a training environment/kill house?

I'd hope so, but I'm guessing taxpayers will be on the hook as usual and everybody involved keeps their jobs.

A former student of mine who works for a community organization in Chicago just posted this on Facebook:

-------
While I can write a book at this point on the circus/processing center of Cook County Courts... I would like to provide an example of how stupid/oppressive this system is...

A dear friend of mine was wrongfully accused of stealing an item which ended up being a felony case. Witness/victim said he did not do it but he was charged anyway because he was at the wrong place at the wrong time and our system criminalizes black youth, always assuming the worst. Basically the police had to arrest someone at the scene and they choose "said friend." He decided to opt in for a trial.

This said friend, while waiting for trial spent 5 months in jail, 9 months on house arrest, had to check in and drop with his prohibition officer on a consistent basis (if he missed a check in or dropped dirty he gets penalized/possibility of being sent back to jail).

Check in's and extended court dates means; he had to take off from work (while explaining to employers why), pay court fees, pay lawyer fee's (thousands of dollars), make sure his lawyer actually showed up and knew his case (which most don't unless you remind them), find transportation money, find someone to watch his daughter, and was labeled a felon, and had to deal with people assuming he was guilty. I watched the judge belittle and dehumanize him in court by doing such things as making him write 4,000 times 'I will not be late for court" for being ten minutes late one time for reasons he could not control. Just by going through the process of getting into the courtroom is traumatic in itself. And worst of all dealing with the anxiety of being convicted knowing he was innocent. That is 100% terrifying.

Every time we showed up to court either the judge, witness, or cop failed to show or attorneys were not ready FOR 2 YEARS ! 2 YEARS he has had to deal with said issues above.

TODAY all charges were dropped and he was found not guilty. While we are celebrating the win, he can not get the past two years back or time away from his daughter while incarcerated or all the legal fee's etc. Our system is completely broken and the above story is another reason to keep fighting for reform.

To my friend, I'll always have your back and I look forward to the next steps we take getting your money/time back :) Lawyer friends let me know if you have ideas to make this situation better.
