Second Debate Thread

I don't know what the hell he will do knowell---and that's the problem.

The POTUS has almost always been filled by people who, even if you didn't respect their politics, are extremely intelligent, even-keeled, very good temperament, and surrounded by a team of intellectual elites to help guide and assist when needed. Donald Trump fits almost none of those checkboxes. He has almost no policies that he has laid out other than "boundaries around states" for health insurance, 35% to 15% for business taxes, and building a wall on our Southern border to stop immigration that has basically become negative growth in the past 10 years.

I am sorry you were entertained. I just do not fear Trump like you guys do. Do you really think he is dropping a nuke on someone? If not, he is less likely, not more likely, to get us in another war. His trade policies are a little nuts, but he will have to get that through congress. Whatever he does will be compromised like Hell. He is all about negotiations. He has no position that is nonnegotiable.

If he does not actually nuke someone, there is nothing to fear from that great big teddy bear called "The Donald". I really don't see any reason to think he would actually use nukes.

I just don't see where he will do more damage to the country than Hillary. I would love to have a good president, but that option is not available to us. So sit back and enjoy the show.

Trump's unpredictability would destabilize the markets and turn the economy downwards into a recession.

How bad was last night?

A lot of people consider it a success for Trump despite:

1. Blatantly disagreeing with his running mate on foreign affairs.
2. Showing support for Assad.
3. Stating that his political opponent should be in jail instead of running for POTUS.
4. Referring to Clinton as "the devil" who has "hate in her heart".
5. Deflecting the audio/video from 10 years ago as "locker room talk".

The bar is so low for him that it's comical. The candidates are clearly being judged on sliding scales, and last night is another good example of that as well.

If any other candidate in debate history said/did anything almost anything that Trump did last night then people would be aghast. We are just so used to the childish antics of Trump that he is basically given a pass. There is no "shock factor" anymore about it.

I just shook my head during most the debate last night because it's unfathomable that this is still even something we have to watch.

1) Why should he not disagree with Pence. He is the top of the ticket.
2) Assad is awful but if he is deposed, what will arise. I assume ISIS or best case scenario a Libya scenario with absolute chaos. I would think we should have learned by now that deposing dictators and leaving chaos is worse than doing nothing.
3) I think a lot of people realize that most people would have at least faced charges and likely served some time for what she has done.
4) That was just a moment of channeling BS4L
5) What would you have suggested?

Maybe. That would be countered by the growth from lower taxes. Markets would rally if he is not indeed a disaster.

I can agree with this. On the other hand, we rarely know more about a candidate than their campaign allows us to know. It's hard to say that we have not had quite a few poor choices as president in the past and Hillary seems very likely to be another.

The people who have had it beaten into their head by right wing media that Hillary is guilty of something despite being declared innocent multiple times.

Apologize profusely, said that it was a huge mistake and he shouldn't have said it. Accept any type of personal responsibility instead of just labeling it standard fare to joke about sexually assaulting women.

*Logs into the Tunnels to see if the Sensitive Sallies needfully declared victory on a night when she should have obviously been able to throw the knock-out punch, and somehow she didn't, and he held his own*

*See that the Sensitive Sallies needfully declared victory on a night when she somehow didn't throw the knock-out punch and allowed him to hang around to hold his own*

*Logs out of the Tunnels*

Was shocked when Paula Deen claimed she'd never dropped an n bomb in her life. Trump bragged to Billy Bush about groping and kissing women, but claimed he's never done those things last night. Just not credible and hugely problematic if one or more credible accusers shows up in the next few weeks. Can't be the change candidate when you're reviving the '90s via accusations and then your own more recent accusers show up.

Hillary wasn't great last night, but silly to think that he should have gone for a KO. Highly likely that she's going to beat Trump, so why would she want a replacement candidate now? 'Pub rats jumped shipped already. What happens to the last few left when more damaging Trump shit comes out?

Deplorables was a GOTV gift for Trump, but more than offset by Machado and the Bush tape among swing state suburban women and Latinos. $5M is GOTV chump change for access to Apprentice n bombs. Works in urban areas and depresses Trump surburban turnout.

I would have as well, but in the world of politics, what he did may have been his best move. Things changed a lot when Bill Clinton was able to get away with his indiscretions. The bar was lowered significantly and Trump is just lowering it a little more.

Hillary is playing prevent defense and trying to run out the clock. That strategy usually works since you only do it when you have the lead. On the other hand, sometime going for the jugular and preventing your opponent from gaining momentum is the better play.

I think this is the beginning of the end for the republican party. Despite running against the second most hated politician who has ever run for president, republicans cannot win the White House. The judges will become more liberal over time. The minorities may become the majority within 30 years (see US News). Younger voters are not associating themselves with Republicans or their ideals (biggest disparity since the 50s). The current Republicans need the crazies to stay relevant, but they are turning away moderates. My wife changed from a republican to a democrat within the past 10 years. My mother in-law is voting for Hillary (first democrat she has voted for in over 40 years), my father in law is not voting for the first time in 40 years. This strategy is not sustainable for Republicans. I honestly don't know what I would do if I was a Republican leader. Donald Trump is entertaining and exciting a base which is tearing apart the Republican party. I actually want a strong moderate Republican party. It is a shame.

It will be virtually impossible to distinguish the second debate from the video saga when the polls come out. I think Clinton is up 4-6 according to most reputable sites, and expect that to go up a couple after this one settles.

If the moderate Republicans could somehow get the hell away from the Religious Right and just run on strong conservative fiscal values there would be plenty of attraction there.

A lot of people I associate with on a daily basis support the fiscal policies of the Republican party, but when you have candidates who believe the same thing you do fiscally, but are: anti gay-marriage, don't believe in evolution, don't believe in climate change, are ignorant about a lot of other social issues currently going on in America, it puts voters in a very tough spot to support and vote for the candidates.

Here's to hoping that when the dust settles the Republican party or what ever survives it becomes much more Libertarian than Conservative. That is what should have happened before now anyway if the party wants a future.

538 has Clinton up to 82.3%.

After sleeping on it, I agree more with DC. Hillary didn't want to win big. If she had destroyed him as badly as she did in the first debate, the chorus to get him to quit would have been deafening and never ending.
