Chicago Cubs Thread - Playoff Push Pending

Travis Wood, Joe Smith, Trevor Cahill, Chris Coghlan and Munenori Kawasaki did not receive qualifying offers. All will become free agents.

With Wood and Chapman as possible departures, Montgomery and Zastryzny have an opportunity for more prominent roles.

have to figure Montgomery is your #5 guy. Wouldn't be surprised to see them go after Jansen for closer. Edwards and Jansen to back end your bullpen wouldn't suck.

Agree with all of this. Cost controlled young starter and back end pen help are the top two items on the list, with Fowler as the third option. Not sure there is any other significant bat they would go after, too many mouths in OF now with the IF set for the next 3+ years. Maybe trade/cut Miggy and look for a new backup C if they aren't going to stick schwarbino back there.

Any chance you sign a powder keg domestic abuser to a big long term deal, or is that only okay for half a season ?

I think the Giants outbid us - they have money to spend, and I can't see him giving us some sort of discount.

In theory Schwarber could just be our third catcher, which would be nice for roster flexibility.

I'm fine keeping Montero as a backup to Contreras if we do that.

Monteros value comes in framing, but his bat is way in decline and he can't throw out anyone, we aren't likely getting out of his $16 million, though. I'm ok keeping him too as a vet, but that is a position that could technically be upgraded.

Keeping Montero allows Schwarber and Montero an additional year to grow and improve. Big question. Will Schwarber be physically able to catch after the injury? If so, to what extent? He has always expressed the desire to catch but the physical demands of the position might prohibit it.

Haha, just saw Brian Matusz is getting a world series ring for his one game shellacking. So is Clayton Richard, Joe Nathan, Neil Ramirez and Adam Warren - congrats bros.

Kyle Hendricks wins the Players Choice Award for best Pitcher in the NL. Solid work there - I think he is a long shot to win the Cy, likely comes in third behind Lester and Scherzer. Have to think Scherzer is almost a lock unless there is the silent anti-advanced stats votes that come in.

I hope it was worth it, guys. It was expensive.

Winning the first championship in 108 years was worth any cost management or ownership incurred. Fortunately, management and ownership concurred. If they had any doubts, the seventh largest single event gathering in human history removed those doubts and left them in awe.

So that one sailed over Blackjack's head (I think).

I'll say this, the universe does a helluva job of course correcting

I think my ideal offseason would be signing Mark Melancon and Andrew Cashner - put them both in the pen, have Cash available to potentially be a starter, but he has the stuff to be a dominant closer/reliever.

We are losing Wood - Strop is in his last year of arb, Rondon looked like trash in the postseason (granted that was coming back off an injury). I think Melancon on a 4/$50 and Cash on a 3 year deal, hopefully in the $12-$15 range, with the 3rd year as a mutual option.

Think we make a run at Jansen?

All of our fellow NL contenders will likely take a stab at him, so it'd be quite the F-U to all of them if we can bring him in

I think it is possible, but based on Hoyers comments, I think they are going to monitor the market and find the best fit at the best rate and not crazy overspend on Chap or Jansen unless their price comes down.

I have also heard Holland is on their list, but his showcase seemed very meh, so maybe as a buy low candidate - don't think that would preclude them from still chasing a more high end reliever. Melancon seems like a better fit - but maybe the Ricketts open up the wallet again this year, just would be against everything that is coming out of the front office now. I would not be shocked if we move a Soler or Almora for a proven closer/starter with control instead of going the FA route. If that happens, would clear up space for us to drop some coin on Dex to keep him around for 3-4 more years.
