Roughly 3 weeks into Trump as PEOTUS...

Mattis seems like a popular pick. All my friends that are current or former servicemen seem to adore the guy.

Mattis seems like a solid pick

I mean except for the part where we have a long (and statutorily enshrined) history of civilian control of the military, meaning that he's going to have to have Congress pass a bill excusing him from that requirement

Not sure I follow?

Secretary of Defense is a civilian position. By law, the Secretary of Defense has to have been retired or out of service for a specified number of years. Mattis is within that window.

Not sure I follow?

SecDef have to be something like seven years removed from military service. Congress can provide an exception, but I think it's only been done once before in history and there was an understanding that it wouldn't happen again.

Yep, this. Seems pretty silly to have the law if Congress is just going to pass an exception every time it comes up. Not sure if this is something that could be filibustered (since it's not an appointment but rather an actual bill that needs to be passed), but if so, I'm not super confident it can get 60 votes.

It's just another example of Trump thinking that he can do whatever he wants, no matter what the law says.

Both sides like this guy. Plus, he is against torture and some other things the wackos that surround Trump believe.

You might be right. Senate Dems might approve it because they feel like he's as good as they're going to get. But it would set a bad precedent

Kasich made his bed. Maybe the Dems will have him.

If Dems filibuster Mattis, Trump will fuck them so hard about it. You'll have REAL America getting so pissed about obstructionism and playing games with keeping their kids safe from the moslems.

Not to mention that he is an outstanding candidate for the position.

Yet he's an illegal candidate.

I get the feeling this was a deliberate move to get rid of the concept of a civilian Secretary of Defense.

It's going to be interesting to see the treatment of Democrats who hold the line to follow the law compared to the treatment of Republicans who failed to fulfill their constitutional duty with respect to Garland.

Not applicable since Dems already nuked the filibuster for cabinet appointments. That being said, would still be ridiculous. Mattis in eminently qualified. Also has a great back story: enlisted man, later graduted from Central Washington, became a General, and an extremely bright guy.

Don't like Flynn because he's an erratic asshole, not because he didn't go to West Point. Would have been no big deal if Harriet Miers were a great legal mind who went to SMU. Perfectly fine to dislike Bubba for all the shit he's done, but silly to bag on him for being an Ivy educated Rhodes Scholar. Individual merit matters whether you're Kurt Warner, Peyton Manning, Scottie Pippen, or Steph Curry. Elites vs non-elites is a bizarre battle, just reward the best possible people and don't over or under weight resume.
