Wake Forest's own Tommy Elrod caught leaking football information to other teams

UNC has not received their punishment yet. And yes, there will be huge penalties for schools that get caught cheating in this fashion.

No, no there will not be. Again, it is Wake Forest football. Nobody cares that somebody beat us by cheating, they were likely going to beat us anyway.

There is no way wake went public with this without presenting the evidence to legal counsel. Which makes the propaganda claim unlikely.

Completely agree. Otherwise, Elrod would have a multi million dollar suit. Just look at UVA and Rolling Stone (very happy for Dean Eramo, btw).

But where does this go from here? As I said, the NCAA and ACC aren't suspending opposing coaches over this. The only reason I see to publicize this is because it was too big a story to keep in house, and you realized it would have leaked at some point anyway.

You don't need "brilliant legal counsel" to know that you don't completely ruin a guy's career unless you have cold, hard evidence. Anyone with an IQ above 80 knows this.

Serious question---does RW hire the attorneys we presumably keep on retainer? Surely he doesn't.

Why not? The athletic department would have different attorneys than the university as a whole. The dude doing 501(c)(3) filings or real estate development wouldn't be advising on athletic matters.

So maybe this is Wellman's final play to eliminate the athletic department, and thus his job, by releasing spurious and libelous claims in a press release about an individual no longer employed by the university, which are sure to garner national attention based upon the potential implications of a broader and more wide-reaching issue? Such hubris in that one.

You're totally right. That's much more plausible than taking a factual statement at face value because they didn't, nor are they required to, publish all of the evidence uncovered as part of their internal review, likely due to the exploration of civil remedies available to the university and/or its affiliates.

Sorry your friend completely and unfathomably betrayed your trust and everyone else's too, hopefully not as sorry as he is.

Oh I see, DR is actually a friend of Elrod. Ergo his defense. There are Wake people on Scout too bashing those speaking out against Elrod, as if his emails and texts weren't part of the evidence. So many on Wake boards have an agenda, a narrative, in taking their positions on matters. That's as lamentable as anything else.

I'm not sure this is true. At the end of the day, the AD is just a department at Wake.

Yeah, I'm unzipped and waiting for that UNC death penalty. So in this case, what penalties does your tin foil hat tell you lie in wait for these unnamed co-conspirators?

The conclusion I draw from this is our AD thinks we are just going to believe everything they say without proof because he believes he is really, really smart. And we aren't. Oh wait, that's the conclusion I already had from the last 24 years. You have completely trashed someone who has spent the last 20 years with us and actually attended Wake. Let's see why. If you have the goods, we're ready to fry him. But I doubt he actually gave them our plays. Clawson calls it "incomprehensible." Riley Skinner calls him a "stand up guy" and finds it "hard to believe." Forgive me for agreeing.

The conclusion I draw, in conjunction with Shutt's statement, is that there are now one or more - most likely more - investigations going on now so that's all they are going to say for the time being.

Elrod not commenting is unsurprising given his retention of a criminal attorney.

I also find it hard to believe, but I'm not going to read things into this that aren't there. At the same time, they have said enough that this is a seven figure defamation suit if they can't back it up. That tells me a lot.

WF has an in house general counsel (J. Reid Morgan). When WF needs to hire outside counsel for any matter, it would be the general counsel who would handle that. Depending on the expertise needed, WF has several firms at the ready.

Right, and that's where Czar Wellman comes in.

I don't know that he is a friend, but that's the conclusion that I drew from his conclusion, unless or until evidence is presented otherwise. Makes you wonder... I'll wait and see.
