Danny Manning Credibility Watch

No, it's you. Our team was outmanned. Our best player didn't get to play.

The coach choose to keep one of them all the bench. Not to mention Manning failing to realize the game was getting out of hand and calling a timeout. Playing dumb games gets you stupid prizes.

I would have a TO, but the way the refs were calling fouls on us, I wouldn't not have brought the players back in the first half.

This thread is so fun. When we win half the posters come to this thread decry the doubters and fret about manning departing for the NBA or Kansas. When we loose the other half come to this thread to compare manning to [Redacted] and fret about the lost decade of deacon basketball. I think there is some confirmation bias going on.

This team is about 10,000 times better than anything [Redacted] put on the floor, for whatever that's worth.

We led at halftime. Who is talking about the first half here?

Red herring.

JC was the only kept out of the game in the second half for fouls.

On the other thread multiple people were upset that our guys with two fouls sat in the first half.

Absolutely agree. We are a lot of fun to watch at times and have the chance to be a legitimate ACC team this year.

Now only if Danny can consistently put together a game plan, make halftime adjustments, use his bench effectively, call timeouts when other teams are taking over the game, and maybe win a few games on the road....Then we'll be back where we need to be.

I know it's been said but on top of everything else he had the worst fucking ties. He's a millionaire - go get a tie that was made in this century.

I get what you're saying but I don't think it's that simple. Not for me, anyway. I can be elated when he recruits well, preps us well, and we go out and execute and win. But why this thread stays alive is a certain type of loss that keeps happening. The lead that falls away toward the end of a game, with common elements always present, like his not knowing how to handle line-ups, players with fouls, time outs, refs, and end of game strategies. Those are critical aspects of coaching with which he struggles, and hence causes us to question his ultimate credibility as an ACC head honcho.

Also his intensity - players can't look to him for inspiration when they really need it, at least from everything I've noticed. Flip side of that coin is that he is not a hothead and represents us with utter class.

Bottom line, if we continue to be unable to get a road ACC win in his third season, this thread will continually hover toward the top of the boards, and deservedly so.

But timeouts! They make you win! How does Manning not know!??!

What are your thoughts on the second half of the game, birdman?

I didn't see the game. I had my kids out at the barn and we rode our horses all afternoon then went out to dinner. Sounds like it was pretty bad though. I think it is pretty safe to conclude at this point that manning is not a good in game coach (at least not consistently good). We have piles of evidence to support that conclusion. Sure overall things are better than they were 4 years ago: he recruits better, seems like he can run a good practice and teach the kids some stuff, but being better than BZ is the lowest possible threshold for success that we can/should strive for. Anyway, my point was that not every game is a referéndum on manning as a coach. Look at his body of work and draw conclusions sure, but game by game fretting is, well, fun to watch.

JC had a shit game unfortunately

Yeah. I didn't see his first 2 fouls, but fouls 3 and 4 were just not smart. I think they were anticipated somewhat by the officials, but he can't be running around underneath the basket chasing a guard who is dribbling past him. I will say, however, that if we have other players who could defend better, he wouldn't be in that position in the first place. Dinos and/or Mitch on the floor produce more work for JC defensively than necessary.

John Collins needs to work on a 12-15 foot jump shot. He plays Center on offense for us and looked like a midget out there against FSU.

Dinos put on about 20-25 pounds (not 45!) so he could play Center on defense.

Collins will play PF at the next level and FSU was a prime game to force the LARGE, but slow FSU bigs to come out and guard his jumper (does he have that in his game yet?).

I don't give a damn about the timeouts, I give a damn about the shitty lineup combinations he continues to run out there for extended periods of time.

Collins hasn't fouled out of a game yet and is 6th in minutes played on the team right now. I get that he may be teaching him lessons, but Manning's lack of understanding of how to manage players with foul trouble is what pisses me off the most. Since our freshmen aren't ready to contribute we are somewhat short on guys who can play inside, so when you pull Collins out (and Moore is hurt), then we basically have to move Dinos to the 5, which completely changes how we play the game.

If he would just let Collins play through it JUST ONCE then it would reap dividends.

You should check out the second half of the game, though you definitely spent your time doing something much better...
