2017 Football Recruiting

With Coach Scheier departing I figured I’d take a quick look back at the impact that he had on recruiting.

Fans will probably remember Coach Scheier for his Twitter account, which he did a good job with. When the Clawson staff took over we thought they would be a dramatic change in social media usage, but it was really only Scheier that ultimately seemed to embrace it.

From what I observed, Scheier’s recruiting impact was limited to his involvement with tight ends and specialists, and his recruiting territory of Washington DC, Baltimore and Northern Virginia. He also seemed to take annual trips up to the Philadelphia-area.

His biggest recruiting haul was the 2015 class when he reeled in Scotty Washington (3 other P5 offers) and Dionte Austin (11 other P5 offers) from the DC/Baltimore area and TE Bo Archibald (13 other P5 offers, including 7 SEC schools). Scheier also narrowly missed on OL Quarvez Boulware in that class.

After 2015, his impact wasn’t quite as significant – at least in terms of recruits with P5 offers.

Scheier definitely deserves recognition for gaining the early commitment of Dom Maggio (1 other P5 offer, but would have had more if he had stayed uncommitted for longer) in the 2016 class. However, Wake didn’t take anyone else from the DC/Baltimore area in that class. The TE commits were Brandon Chapman (2 other P5 offers) and Thomas Cole (no other P5 offers).

Scheier’s commits in the 2017 class are decidedly more under-the-radar types: CB Coby Davis (1 other P5 offer), OL Loic Nya (no other P5 offers) and TE Braden Atkinson (no other P5 offers).

Wake will be losing the connections that he developed in the DC/Baltimore-area. It will be interesting to see if Clawson factors those type of connections into his hiring decision. With Elko and Scheier leaving and Clark Lea rumored to follow Elko to Notre Dame, the following recruiting areas are (or will be) open:

Washington / Baltimore / Northern Virginia
Central Florida (Orlando/Tampa)
Alabama
Tennessee
Western North Carolina (i.e. Asheville)

Clawson could also choose to reconfigure the recruiting areas. I’ve been curious about whether he would give more assistants some responsibility for covering parts of Georgia, which was a state that received a lot of recruiting attention from Wake last cycle.

There is some fertile recruiting ground that is vacant.

The DC/MD/NOVA area has been good to WF football over the years. Among the WF recruits from that area:

Michael Campanaro
Kevin Johnson
Zach Thompson
Chip Vaughn
Eric King
DeLawn Parrish
Jimmy Quander
Montique Sharpe
Michael McCrary

Lee ?

Yes, on the current roster:

Marquel Lee
Cam Serigne
Justin Herron
Scottie Washington
Dionte Austin
Dom Maggio

The thing about that area is that it produces a lot of good football talent, and there is essentially no allegiance to the one local D-1 football school: University of Maryland; so, it's not hard to recruit Campanaro or Kevin Johnson away from U of MD. Also, the area has people from all over so that there is no pressure for kids from Northern Virginia to go to UVA or Tech. It's a place where WF can go, and not face any hometown bias for the in-state universities.

I'm no recruiting guru but I would think PSU's resurgence will have a trickle down effect, making it harder to get good prospects from Md/DC.

You forgot Lucas Caparelli

It would also make them more competitive on the national scene meaning they may be pursuing fewer local targets.

As a Northern VA native, I can assure you that there are no local allegiances. Tech and UVA mayyyyybe have a little bit of pull, but I agree with Pilch that it is not an area partial to any particular school.

I'm also a NoVa native and I recall that when Penn State was in its prime it regularly came here and the rest of the DC area and poached who they wanted, leaving MD, VT and UVA to fight over who was left.

UMD has the 17th best class of 2017 and 17 of their 28 commits are from the DMV.

In 2015 and 2016 Maryland and DC combined for 44 P5 signees in each of those two years (note: Northern Virginia is more difficult to quickly pull stats, so I excluded it). That's good, but not great considering Maryland, Penn State, West Virginia and Virginia are trying to fill their rosters there. If you look at players ranked three stars or lower from 2015 through 2017, about 40% of the P5 recruits committed to one of those 4 schools, with Maryland being the largest.

What makes it even more competitive is that it has become a recruiting area for the B1G, not just the SEC. Another 20% of P5 recruits from that area rated three stars or lower have committed to B1G schools other than Penn State or Maryland.

Doesn't matter got paid.

Basically the same board that I posted two weeks ago. Adam Sparks was removed after he committed to Mizzou. Demetris Harris has been confirmed as a top target after tweeting a picture of himself with 60+ handwritten letters from Wake. I haven’t picked up on any other suitors for Avery Showell, but from his Twitter activity is looks like the Wake staff is working hard to get him back in the fold. Unless Elko wants him at ND, that may happen.

Most likely finish to the class might be WR Sage Surratt, OL Demetris Harris, S Avery Showell and 1 of the CBs. Harris' recruitment is still competitive though, and more competition could emerge for Surratt and Showell. To make matters more complicated, I think the staff’s ideal scenario would be to take only 3 more commits and carry the others over to 2018.

CORNERBACKS

OJ TUCKER (Vanguard / Ocala, FL)
Ratings: 247 3-star (87), Rivals 3-star (5.5)
Commitment Status: Uncommitted (Decommitted from Georgia Tech on December 2)
# of P5 Offers Other Than Wake : 7
Official Visit Plans: Maryland (January 13), Wake Forest (January 20) and UCF (January 27)
Notes: Maryland is the favorite here, but I don’t think their lead is insurmountable. Wake has been targeting him for several months. Coach Elko did his in-home visit on December 1.

JA’SIR TAYLOR (Brick Township / Brick, NJ)
Ratings: 247 3-star (85), Rivals 2-star (5.2)
Commitment Status: Committed to Temple
# of P5 Offers Other Than Wake: 0
Notes: Wake offered on November 13. Wake had in-home visits with Taylor on November 30 and December 8.

SAFETIES

AVERY SHOWELL (Cartersville HS / Cartersville, GA)
Ratings: 247 3-star (79), Rivals 3-star (5.6)
Commitment Status: Uncommitted (Decommitted from Wake Forest on December 16)
# of P5 Offers Other Than Wake: 4
Notes: He said that Wake is still a contender. Played on both sides of the ball for Cartersville’s state championship team. As a receiver he had a ridiculous TD/reception ratio. He made plays all season long. Was 6’1 / 192 at Nike. 4.65 40.

REED BLANKENSHIP (West Limestone School / Lester, AL)
Ratings: 247 3-star (86)
Commitment Status: Committed to Middle Tennessee State
# of P5 Offers Other Than Wake: 1
Notes: Multi-sport athlete from a small town in Alabama. Was 6’2 / 174 at Nike last spring. 4.58 40.

OFFENSIVE LINE

DEMETRIS HARRIS (Robert E Lee HS / Jacksonville, FL)
Ratings: 247 3-star (84), Rivals 3-star (5.6)
Commitment Status: Uncommitted (Decommitted from Georgia Tech on December 8)
# of P5 Offers Other Than Wake: 1. Lots of non-P5 offers.
Notes: I really doubt that he ends up back at Georgia Tech. Harris was one of Wake’s top targets last summer. South Florida might be a slight favorite. UCF is very involved. Louisville may be considering an offer. Coach Tabacca did his in-home visit on December 11.

WIDE RECEIVER

SAGE SURRATT (Lincolnton HS / Lincolnton, NC)
Ratings: 247 3-star (83), Rivals 2-star (5.4)
Commitment Status: Uncommitted. (Decommitted from Harvard on December 15)
# of P5 Offers Other Than Wake: 2
Notes: One of three players in the country to surpass 2,000 receiving yards this season. Has official visit to Wake scheduled for January 13. His brother Chazz was a highly-touted QB recruit that flipped his commitment from Duke to UNC after the Heels offered Sage a preferred walk-on spot on the Heels basketball team. Duke and UNC are reportedly also involved. Multiple 247 Crystal Balls for Wake.

Just after I posted that ^ 247 reported that OJ Tucker will no longer visit Maryland. One would think that would put Wake in the driver's seat.

ETA: Tucker is also hearing from Notre Dame now.

Sounds like Elko may have this guys ear. Losing him to ND would be the first fallout from Elko leaving.

Just watched some clips of Jeffrey Burley; what a hitter. Hope we hang on to him.

Just looked at a list of expected official visitors to Ole Miss. It didn't mention Burley. So that's a good sign. Agree with you on his senior highlights. I really hope that Wake gets him signed.

94, any mention of more grey shirts? We'll have to spend one 'ship next year on a kicker.
