LJVM Renovation Plans ?

We've had 10 home games. So in order for there to be an average of 15 students per game, there would have to be fewer than 150 students at the UNC game, and 0 for the rest of them.

Yes but it's obvious you 1) don't know anybody in the AD or 2) he was trolling you and you believed it because both of the claims you made are completely false.

I am repeating a quote from a friend in the AD. That is all.

I was told this during the UNC game so it is likely that game was not included. Sorry for the lack of clarification. Also, it seems I am incorrect about the attendance at that game so I will defer to you guys. It's hard to judge without everyone wearing the same thing anymore!!

The guy with whom I went to the UNC game has a freshman at Wake. He said there was some sort of sorority council, or perhaps individual sorority meeting scheduled during the UNC game. We were shaking our heads.

Seems like there's always sorority rush stuff during the UNC/Duke games. They couldn't care less about the basketball schedule

No, that's not all. You also claimed to be in a section next to the student section at the UNC game and there were fewer than 100 students.

Sure felt that way but as I said above it appears I am incorrect.

Think we will ever be able to get students to actually wear black and gold to games again? One of the most frustrating things to me is looking over at the student section and seeing a rainbow of color with a little black mixed in. Small complaint, and something I would happily take over empty seats, but I am worried that even if we get back to the level we enjoyed under Odom or Skip, we still may not have the buy-in of the average student the way we used to.

I know where the students sit. I also recently spoke with a friend in the AD. He said that they have gone through the student section each game this year and checked IDs to see how many actual students were attending. The average for the season? And this is not including games over break. It is 15. 15 students not including the band. It's absolutely pathetic.

I almost believe the number, given the number of crappy non-conference games we play. I don't believe that the marketing department is going through the stands Arizona Show Me Your Papers style and asking for IDs. Could be wrong though.

Really the death of Screamin' Demons is a shame. It was a must-join org my freshman year, and I don't know if it was because of bad leadership or what, but it became so stigmatized by my senior year (even as the team paradoxically got better).

Right now there is nobody organizing students to go to games. It's pretty much every student and their friends making ad hoc decisions. Even that should produce better attendance than we're getting, but an organization that had credibility with the students would go a long way. Sadly I fear that it's been so long since we've had good student crowds that there's few people in the marketing department who were there then and remember how it was done and how to encourage it now.

Moving the arena to "campus" has two problems:

1) where in the blue hell would you even put it?

2) while more convenient for students, it makes it a logistical nightmare for larger community, aka the people who consistently show up for games rather than the students.

Renovating the Joel is a win for everyone. Makes perfect sense.

Since WF now owns the LJVM, and the surrounding properties, isn't it now an "on campus" arena?

Could we slap a basketball court in the LJVM Annex and play there for a year versus going to Greensboro?

I'm expecting to hear 80 Million for this redo. Ole Miss' amazing new showplace that fits its fanbase cost 96 million. The parking lot of the Joel will be just fine for our new stadium--though I bet we could do better with a land swap. But, again, the location is secondary. No matter how many seats you take out of the Joel, you will still have cavernous, empty, sound sucking space. The place simply isn't designed for college basketball. Way too slow a slope backing away from the floor, way too much space, no proper cut for student seating. Those things cannot be fixed.

NC State continues to suffer from playing in a mixed use building. College basketball is best in places built just for that. We should have insisted on it when we were lured out of old Wake Forest. Since we left Gore Gymnasium, we have never had a place built just for us. The Joel is 27 years old. Carmichael lasted 19 years. It's time for us to build our own gym.

I will be shocked if the reno is $80M. At that price I would be closer to agreeing with you that we just raze it and start over. But, I will believe that number when I hear it. Some of the problems you mention can be fixed, I believe, or at least mitigated. I guess we will have to wait and see what they are planning.

Seems high considering that Georgia Tech's renovation was only $45M, and they basically gutted the place

From Danny Manning's website: "Wake Forest plans to spend more than $40 Million to make it the premier arena in college basketball."
