CBM: X-Men '97 finale; My Adventures with Superman S2 May 25; The Boys S4 June 13

Saw it Thursday night. I've rewatched Vol 1 so much it's hard to comprehend the two right now. Very enjoyable and it almost reminded me of some old Star Trek plots just with more adult humor thrown in. Overall it was a very good sequel.

Spoilers are fair game.

Again, it was a very good movie. The MCU is just so good that a very good movie isn't even close to the MCU top 5. The biggest problem with this film was that Awesome Mixtape Vol 2 was a huge step down from Vol 1. The songs weren't as good and weren't as integrated into the film. It wouldn't be as big of a deal if the first film didn't completely nail it.

The Ravagers and Ego father-son scenes could have been trimmed significantly. There was a bit about 2/3 in that was a huge laugh and I thought "wow, we haven't laughed in awhile."

I thought Yondu's death was done well. But at the same time, I don't think it was necessary. All and all, I think it would have been a better movie if Yondu had survived and all the set up at the robot brothel and the mutiny was cut. Maybe introduce Sly and the other head Ravagers (who I assume are important in the comics) in some other way.

One big plus in this film was the Gamora-Nebula relationship. It made sense. Nebula got a good character arc. I think they could have done this in Vol 1 and it would have fixed one of the only problems with it.

I'll quickly go over some positives.

Yeah, technology! Young Kurt Russell was even better than young RDJ and young Michael Douglas. Not sure why that was in 1980 instead of a little earlier though. Ego was a good character and I liked the arc even after it became obvious he was going to be a villain. The Hasselhoff gag was good.

All the main characters had good character growth. The Star Lord-Gamora stuff wasn't too forced. I thought the Drax was good except for the borderline verbal abuse of Mantis. Rocket and Baby Groot were just great. Automatic feels. They could have overdone Baby Groot but they didn't. I'm looking forward to teenage Groot in Infinity War. Rocket is a wonderful balance of humor and heart. I look forward to his interactions in Infinity War more than anybody else.

More to come.

Totally disagree about Yondu's death. It was perhaps a little too drawn out, but it was really moving.

Read it again. You only disagree about whether or not it should have been in the film. We agree that it was too drawn out yet well done.

I thought Yondu's death was done well. But at the same time, I don't think it was necessary.

I think this is what DF is disagreeing with, and if so I agree with him.

Starlord kills his father to save the universe - in the process he comes to the realization that Yondu's care for him is more important to his identity, but this realization necessitates a sacrifice for the plot's sake - hence Yondu's death.

For a character who has his past essentially defined by the loss of a parent, it's emotional for Starlord to lose two family figures (one a parent; the other a father) in this movie. Very moving script. In addition, would be strange for Starlord to come to realization that Yondu means more to him and to have him pal around with the Guardians in pt. 3.

See ya Yondu.

Watching Rocket take on the Ravagers by himself to Southern Nights was worth the price of admission for me.

I hate losing Yondu from the franchise.

The team Stallone put together is the original Guardians of The Galaxy team from the comics.

The trailers spoiled some of the gags that would have gotten bigger laughs if you didn't know they were coming.

I am also amazed at the MCU's ability to make good characters out of characters that were absolutely terrible in the comics. Mantis, Taserface and Her are good examples from this movie.

He speaks!

I agree Yondus death was moving and necessary for this movie

Also I'm curious about the music criticism, I thought it was once again very well done

I just really can't believe what Gunn has done with GoTG. It's quite amazing

I thought the music in volume 2 was just as good: Brandy, Surrender, Father & Son, Fox on the Run, Mr Blue Sky, Bring It On Home To Me, The Chain, are all excellent classic songs.

I'm not nearly as down on GOTG2 as Ph is, I thought it was great. None of the run time dragged for me. I would put this one right up there with the original, and I just re-watched it last week.

Saw it yesterday afternoon. Because it's a sequel, it's not as magical as the first, but I enjoyed it nearly as much.

I don't have any significant criticisms other than Sylvester Stallone's presence as a supporting character distracts just like Sam Jackson does.

Oh, and I'm tired of Karen Gillian being covered up by all that makeup.

I rather much enjoyed Vol 2. I haven't rewatched the first one and it's been long enough in my rear view mirror that I can't really make a ranking of them. I do think Kurt Russell's Ego provided a rare satisfying villain, by MCU standards.

The music was every bit as good as in Vol 1, even woven into the plot in one instance.

Nerd nit-pick: I wish Ego had said "lower case 'c'" when he said he was a Celestial instead of "lower case 'g'" for god. We met the Celestials in Vol 1. They looked like what Celestials look like. In the comics, Ego is considered one of the Elders, along with (among others) the Collector (Benecio Del Toro in MCU) and the Grandmaster (Goldblum). It could be said Ego is more Elder adjacent than strictly a member, but regardless, he's certainly not a Celestial. Anyway, this was merely a nerd annoyance and didn't affect my movie score one way or the other.

I hope in Vol. 3, Drax gets some action sequences. After the opening scene, he was comic relief and nothing else. He was funny as comic relief, but he's supposed to be a major ass kicker and we didn't see that. Maybe next time.

As to Yondu's death, I suffer from Marvel jadedness. No one stays dead, especially when the team he's a member of (original GotG) is shown together and oh, they happen to be proficient at time travel (from the 31st century in the comics).

I'm very excited for Adam Warlock, one of my top 10 favorite Marvel characters.

I loved Stan Lee with the Watchers. I would have taken slightly more pleasure in it if instead of referencing appearing as a FedEx delivery man, he mentioned being a hot dog vendor to show he spans across the cinematic universes.

To other things - The Inhumans' pic is pretty cringeworthy. It looks like something from 90s superhero live action. Maybe Lockjaw will save the day.
