Official 2018 NBA Offseason Thread: the preseason cometh

Dedmon signs with Atlanta. Good signing by Atlanta as I think they will focus their pick and roll around Collins and Dedmon will hit the boards and play a lot. I guess he'll be backed up by the thick Plumlee.

When is Pao Gasol signing. Can't say I have big chub for the Spurs signings. They better hope that LA can focus and Leonard can get even better.

I'm getting happy feelings thinking about Collins working the PnR and passing up a jumper to throw an alley-oop to a cutting Dedmon.

The Spurs signings are meh. Perhaps the gameplan is to lock up Mills and Simmons and wait until LMA and Green are gone to make big moves. I'm surprised the Spurs aren't bringing over more draft and stash players. Bryn Forbes has been lighting it up in Summer League with 35 points the last two games. He will be valuable off the bench if he can limit his turnovers and play good defense. I'm not sure how Pop will manage a second team with so many scorers but weak defenders. Also there is a glut in the backcourt, especially if Manu comes back.

ESPN Summer League rankings. http://insider.espn.com/nba/insider...as-summer-league-2017-best-worst-kevin-pelton

2. John Collins

After developing as a traditional post player at Wake Forest, Collins has to employ a new style to succeed in the NBA.

He has shown that ability this week, playing well as a center for the Hawks' summer league team. Collins has pulled down double-figure rebounds in all three games while shooting 60 percent from the field, highlighted by 22 points on 9-of-11 shooting against New Orleans.

Collins made a list of six (plus Tatum) here.

[h=3]John Collins, Atlanta Hawks[/h] Unsurprisingly, given the college season he just had, Collins is averaging a double-double and has been among the more productive bigs in Vegas. He fell on draft night over concerns about his overall NBA readiness and maturity, but in the Summer League environment, it matters not. Collins has great hands, rebounds well and has displayed good touch from mid-range. He’ll have ample opportunity to shine as the Hawks rebuild and looks like a worthwhile project.

rankings sans blurbs

Best rookies

1. Dennis Smith Jr.
2. JC
3. Donovan Mitchell

Honorable Mention: Bam Adebayo, Miami Heat; De'Aaron Fox, Sacramento Kings; Kyle Kuzma, Los Angeles Lakers; Frank Mason III, Sacramento Kings; Jayson Tatum, Boston Celtics

Most disappointing rookie: Zach Collins, Portland Trail Blazers

Best NBA veterans

1. Brandon Ingram
2. DeAndre' Bembry
3. Troy Williams

Honorable mention: Malik Beasley, Denver Nuggets; Yogi Ferrell, Dallas Mavericks; Bryn Forbes, San Antonio Spurs; Montrezl Harrell, LA Clippers; Wayne Selden, Memphis Grizzlies; Pascal Siakam, Toronto Raptors; Rashad Vaughn, Milwaukee Bucks

Most disappointing NBA veterans

Chicago Bulls' veterans

The Bulls are the defending summer league champions, and with several first-round picks on the roster they figured to be contenders to repeat. Instead, Chicago got smashed by a combined 36 points in its first two games before getting a win Tuesday.

Rookie Lauri Markkanen led the summer Bulls in that game, with Denzel Valentine the only veteran to suit up. He shot 6-of-21, improving his shooting percentage to 27.2 percent this week.

Though he played well defensively, Kris Dunn shot 3-of-12 in his only appearance and Cameron Payne didn't show much improvement from last year's frustrating sophomore season.

Best free agent

Brandon Paul, Cleveland Cavaliers

A veteran of the G League who played for Cleveland's affiliate in Canton last season, Paul has flashed a well-rounded game for a Cavaliers team that has gone 3-0 with just one roster player (second-year guard Kay Felder). He has averaged 17.4 points, 3.3 assists and an impressive 3.3 steals per 36 minutes.

In a year that lacks a single standout unsigned player, Paul tops the list.

Honorable mention: Alex Caruso, L.A. Lakers; Charles Cooke, Minnesota Timberwolves; Matt Costello, Minnesota Timberwolves; Jared Cunningham, Washington Wizards; Kennedy Meeks, Toronto Raptors

Maturity ?

How can they say any veteran has played better than Forbes? And they don't even have him Top 3. Big joke!

SI has posted the maturity thing twice, once after draft night and that one. I haven't seen it referenced in other outlets. JC comes off plenty mature to me, never been in trouble, no idea what they're referencing.

Didn't he get a ton of techs at Wake or am I misremembering?

you're thinking of devin thomas. i think i only recall 1 tech for JC and it was iffy.

You're misremembering.

Also, CP3 was better than Raymond Felton

Maturity seems like a lazy reference to his age.

Any word on who the other two teams are in the Melo trade?

You're misremembering.

Also, CP3 was better than Raymond Felton
CP didnt really blow up till the summer before his senior year (pretty sure his AAU Gaters won the AAU natty... But Reyshawn was considered their best player) then he had a really great senior season. Felton was pretty consistently ridiculous throughout high school.

I'm going to sound like rj in 20 years recounting these tales

if it's a ref to his age it's lazy and dumb. it's not like he was the youngest dude in the draft. there were a ton of teenagers picked ahead of him so you can't say he slid because of age (maturity) unless you mean something else.
