BBall Recruiting Thread 2k18 - Hoard, Mucius, Lewis, and Wright sign NLIs!

Tough sell to Mucius if we can't place Hoard as a versatile 4. I understand positions are much more fluid now but that's a lot of bodies 6'7"+ on a potential roster.

I'm ultimately hoping for Wright, Mucius, Hoard and a scoring guard instead of a big.

You are over thinking this. Hoard and mucius are both wings. Neither of them will ever play in the post. We either get them as wings or we don't get them. If we play 4 out one 1 that opens another wings spot but we aren't going to stick either of them in the post.

My best guess is that wth the way Manning is currently recruiting that he is trying to make Wake look as much like the modern day positionless NBA as he can. We will never run out of ways to play 6'8" guys that can defend, dribble, pass, and score. The position they play is irrelevant at that size because you can morph into whatever is necessary.

We want a big with those three because of all three of those players see themselves as a guard and not a big. If you recruit another guard your chances of signing Hoard and mucius drop significantly. They are probably looking for evidence from Wake that they are going to play guard and not be stuck in the post.

Good post, I agree. Having 6'6"-6'9" guys who can run the floor and have good length is where things seem to be heading even for back court guys. Guard heavy teams will become the shape of college basketball IMO in the very near future if not already so. Bigs will be used like SF's instead of back to the basket type Centers-PF's like in the past

I'm curious how Manning is pitching playing time given that Collins didn't even start right away during a promising freshman year.

Wasn't there a Sr. Center? And foul trouble?

I seem to recall when Louisville took down the Nets against Duke in 1986 they had a team of seemingly all 6'7" guys. They may have been way ahead of their time.

I think the Hoard/Mucius recruitment sounds too much like the Chaundee/Brandon Randolph recruitment last year. We all tried to convince ourselves that they could play together and were interested in playing together, but then IIRC Randolph basically eliminated us when Chaundee committed.

I say we get one of the two, with the first to commit "scaring off" the other, especially if Hoard commits to Wake. Mucius has already insinuated that he wants to be "the man."

I'm starting to feel that way too. Thus the search for a sleeper PF.

The Roberts kid looks athletic. Plays smaller than 6-11 in that clip though.

Scout lists him at 6-8/205. Makes sense. That video is from last March.

Here's how he did in the Peach Jam:

Day 2
Player: Nate RobertsAAU Squad: Team MeloResult Gm 1: L 67-60 vs Howard PulleyStats Gm 1: 0 points (0-0 FG), 3 reb, 1 blk
Result Gm 2: L 73-67 vs Nike PhamilyStats Gm 2: 2 points (0-2 FG), 3 reb

Day 1
Player: Nate RobertsAAU Squad: Team MeloResult: W 94-87 vs Cal Supreme EliteStats: 4 points (2-5 FG), 2 ast, 4 reb, 2 stl

Here is a clip from Sept last year. Definitely an upside PF worth keeping an eye on.

We had returning starters when John was recruited. Plus, he wasn't a highly rated recruit. We had also signed a higher rated player in Doral. It was natural for John to realize he would have limited PT as a frosh.

Hoard and Mucius are much higher rated players than John was. Danny also wants to play a combination of athletic players. Many times we will have a PG, a center and three wings. There's tons of minutes available for both Hoard and Mucius.

Chill Brown Hoard Mucius Sarr would be pretty sweet. With a senior Woods, senior Doral, junior Sam, and possibly (hopefully) senior Crawford, that's a really good team.

I'm curious how Manning is pitching playing time given that Collins didn't even start right away during a promising freshman year.

There were multiple factors in Collins not playing much as a freshman.
1. He was still developing. End of sophomore year Collins was much better than beginning of sophomore year Collins. Beginning of sophomore year Collins was much better than end of freshman year Collins.
2. Foul trouble. I suspect Danny was trying to protect him from getting a reputation of being a guy who fouled out of a lot of games. So when he got a few fouls, he sat.
3. Senior Devin Thomas was a double-double machine, and played the same position. Hard to give a lightly regarded freshman much playing time over senior. Leading scorer, leader in blocks and leading rebounder on the team is hard to push out of the way.

So Manning's pitch is "You're going to get a lot of playing time if you're fully developed, stay out of foul trouble, and if Woods, Chaundee, and Melo don't blow up at the 3."

don't average 3 personal fouls in 15 minutes of play. JC had almost the same amount of PF per game his freshman and sophomore years despite just about double the playing time.

82 total PF in 446 minutes played versus 98 PF in 878 minutes played. and the latter was still too much as to be problematic during the season.

looking at someone that didn't have foul trouble, brandon childress was a 3-star who had the 2nd best player on the team at PG, the 3rd best player on the team in the other guard spot, and a junior in the main guard back up role (crowded back court) and still got 21.5 minutes a game while not being ready at all early in the year. he got better though.

you could see a not crowded wing situation and being highly regarded as a recruit leading to much more playing time as long as you don't average 8 PF per 40 minutes.

I don't think Manning is out there giving PT as a main part of his pitch. I would imagine it's a combo of:

1. I can get you ready for the NBA;
2. You will have a chance to bring this program back to prominence; and
3. You will have a chance to take down the giants of college basketball
4. I'm not a creepy old white man and I want try and shoehorn you into a role that doesn't fit
