Gator fans thoughts on Dave Clawson

Just curious, if winning at four schools isn't enough, then who does fit the criteria?

Winning bigger and more often at Wake.

Like I said, I’m very happy with Clawson at Wake, but I still can’t point to a victory over any of the big boys.

Florida football wasn't invented until 1990, when the lord of the deep route Steve Spurrier made it into existence to humiliate UGA until he dies.

You do make a good point though with this two coach theory. In fact, Alabama wouldn't be anything if Bear Bryant or Nick Saban never coached there.

Or Wallace Wade or Frank Thomas or Gene Stallings. Those three put together won as many National Championships as Bear.

I don't know, Urban Meyer didn't win any conference titles at Bowling Green. However, he did very well in the MWC. Nonetheless, he didn't win bigger before he got to UF. Best wins were a regular season win against an Oregon team ranked near the bottom of the top 25 and a Fiesta Bowl win over an extremely overrated Pitt. That Pitt team may be the worst team that ever made a BCS bowl. Then he goes on to become one of the best CFB HCs ever.

Regardless, man I hope people making decisions like these at all the schools with big job vacancies share your opinion.

Seems like odd criteria.

James Franklin had two wins over SEC teams that finished above .500 in his three years at Vandy -- and one, 2012 Ole Miss, only did so b/c they won their bowl game. I'd say he's worked out at Penn State

Clawson coaches in the best division of the best football conference in the country. Why would he want to slum down to the SEC. Makes no sense. If we were to win out this season , Wake could raise any amount of money to keep Clawson. No problem.

Doesn’t count if it happened before WW2, no one denies this!

Also Gene Stallings wouldn’t have been the coach if Bear didn’t exist.

I guess I should clarify (again). I like Dave Clawson. I think he is a great college football coach. I do not, however, think he will get any kind of a look from Florida. Florida has the resources and ability to hire pretty much whomever they would like (within reason, of course)... There are better candidates than Clawson, so I would be disappointed if that hire were to happen (for two reasons... Florida could do better and Wake would be out of a great head coach).

To compare Clawson's resume to Urban Meyer before he went to Florida is comical. In 2 years at Utah, Meyer went 22-2 and won the MWC twice. Also won two bowls... The Liberty Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl. I don't care who he beat. 12-0 and finishing 4/5 in the country is much better than Wake will do this year, even if Wake wins out.

I'll give you James Franklin... But even he had a better resume than Clawson, given he was coming off of two 9-4 seasons at Vandy where they finished the season ranked. That is different than 7-6 and whatever Wake finishes this year.

Again, I really like Clawson. I just don't think he would fire up anyone at UF (including me).

And we could easily win 8-9 next year with a lot of returnees and an easier schedule.

Don’t think Clawsons success at Fordham, Richmond and BG can be ignored either

Agree. So I’d worry about him leaving after next year.

He’ll probably be a candidate for some big jobs this year, but I doubt anything he’d leave Wake for.

And do you forecast such a win in the near future under Clawson at Wake?

Hopefully, every other school thinks Clawson has a woefully inadequate resume all the while winning at BOWF.

Agree to disagree I guess.

I don't think it's "comical" to compare the two. On one hand, you have a head coach with 4 years of experience that won a ton of games in 2 years en route to 2 conference titles and 2 bowl wins. On the other, you have a head coach with ~17 years of experience that won 4 conference titles at 3 schools that all needed complete rebuilds and just won a bowl game while working on his fourth rebuild.

Meyer won 1 bowl game over a ranked team during his HC career at that point, Clawson has done the same and I don't understand why you don't care who Utah beat in the bowl games. And yes, WF has no chance at finishing in the top 5 this year, but that doesn't render Clawson's body of work as a "joke" compared to Meyer either. You can make a convincing argument that Meyer's resume looks better, but it's not so much better that it's "comical" to draw a comparison. Nonetheless, I agree that Clawson wouldn't fire up the UF fan base.

Speaking of HC resumes, I can't believe UF hired Musdelik and McElwain. I don't understand why it took this long to give this decision the attention it deserves.

They are two hires away from being largely irrelevant over the last fifty years.

You would give your right & left freaking nut Shorty to be as irrelevant in football as Florida has been with 2 National championships with Spurrier & Urban! Give me a freaking break about being 2 hires away from being largely irrelevant! What a joke. Do you know anything about football at all?

Clawson might be a candidate for the second tier of jobs that will open this season (Arkansas, Nebraska, Ole Miss, and any that open due to who TAMU, Florida, and Tennessee hire), but only Nebraska seems like a remotely good fit.

Maybe he takes that, but after Pelini was canned for being too fiery and winning at least 9 games every year, and Riley will be canned after only 3 seasons, I am not sure that job would be very attractive for a builder like Clawson (who has a little fire in him himself).

I am not worried about this crop of jobs.

For fans at a school like Florida to get ok with someone like Clawson, he has to do something flashy and shiny. Like the Houston guy. You gotta get Wake into the top 10 by starting 10-0 or whatever and beat some top teams and get into a big time bowl game. And you have to score score score while you're doing it.

A couple times over .500 I don't care where you do it isn't going to interest ANYONE at a big time football school. No athletic director is going to think he can get a fan base behind that.

End of story.

The point was kind of their record over the last fifty years other than those with your blow buddy Spurrier and Urban.

Clawson is a great coach. Honestly I would put him in the top 3-4 in the league. I would also really be surprised to see him back next year. The guy will have bigger programs nipping at him and this is the year he should make a jump. I doubt he goes to Fla but he will go somewhere. Write it down.

Yeah, but SEC vs ACC. :rulz:

I do think that UF is a better job than Penn State was when Franklin took over.
