The Syracuse and NC State boards both say Wake Forest will return to mediocrity when Wolford is gone.(High Compliment to Wolford). But it shows how clueless they are. Hinton has won games for Wake in the heat of battle. In addition:

2017 Stats
Wolford QB rating....163.5
Hinton...160.3

That's dumb. John has been great this year and has made some of the people who on this board said he belonged on an FCS team eat their words. However, I'm not sure we'll miss much of a beat next year with either Kendall or even Newman if he improves under center. The main thing for either one of them next year is keeping the turnovers at a minimum I think, but I'm not concerned about the offense next year. There will be more question marks for the defense going into next year, but even those don't cause me a lot of concern either. I think barring major injuries we'll be as good or better next year.

So.....
Using the same logic, do Syracuse and NC State their teams are going to be good once their current QBs leave???

Yeah, we bring back our entire defensive backfield, who showed improvement throughout the season. We bring back our entire offense, sans Wolford and Serigne. D-Line shouldn't see much of a drop. Linebackers were questionable this season, IMO. Hopefully that unit at least gives us the production we saw this year.

IMO, QB is the biggest question mark. While I agree that Hinton has proven he is a competent QB, I'm not sold he can make the timing and seam throws that Wolford lived on this year. I also don't think that the staff is 100% sold on Hinton as a shoe in for the starting job next year.

And yet most of them didn't even know who he was until he kicked their ass.

BTW, I randomly ran into John on line waiting at a restaurant for Sunday brunch yesterday. Very nice kid. I spoke to him for just a minute about the season. I told him to keep it up - so we should be good for the rest of the year...

I'm calling it now...A MINUMUM of 10 regular season wins !!! A real chance at ACC Championship...Look at what Wake returns, the other teams lose and the schedule...

To say our QB play might drop off a bit is fair, Wolford has been that good. But with what we have waiting in the wings the drop should not be precipitous and there is every reason for optimism that we just keep rolling along. Hinton seems that good. Those expecting disaster are clueless. Depth is a beautiful thing.

Things can change, but it appears that WF's 2018 schedule is slightly more manageable than this year's schedule.

Conference home games: BC, Clemson, Cuse and Pitt (as things stand today WF would be favored in 3 of those 4)
Conference road games: FSU, L'ville, State, Duke (as things stand today WF would be favored at FSU and Duke, but FSU will have Francois back next year, and will likely be really good again; guessing Lamar Jackson may declare for the NFL, not sure if Petrino will survive the AD Department shakeup, L'ville could be in rebuild mode; State loses a ton of seniors, but Doeren has built a solid program).

OOC games: at Tulane, Towson, Rice and ND (this game is at home; the Charlotte game is in 2020). WF will be solid favorites in the first 3. ND loses a large part of their OL. WF will be a dog, but beating ND at home is doable.

Will be interesting to see how WF handles higher expectations, but there are a lot of winnable and expected to win games on the 2018 schedule.

I think most of the NCAA would consider where we are now pretty mediocre, and I'm perfectly fine with it. :noidea:

Cuse and State thinking it takes anything more than mediocrity to beat them is pretty funny though.

Glad we finally play Pitt. As a side note, the last time Rice came to BB&T/Groves I sat out in the rain to watch us tie them. It sucked.

They need it to be true. Otherwise, they must resign themselves to the reality that their teams will be perpetually battling it out with BC for 5th place in the Atlantic Division.

Show them this:

Lewis got suspended last year and Scotty Washington passed him on the depth chart. Clearly Clawson saw something in Washington last year that didn't quite manifest itself on the field. Washington looks like he could blow up next year.

Oh I know all that, but still you'd think Lewis would've made an impact sometime this year with the flashes he's shown in the past. Outside of Wolford, I'm not sure there is a more improved player this year than Scotty Washington.

I'm really excited for Hines, Dortch and Washington on the field together next year.

I expect Lewis would be a candidate to graduate and take a 5th year somewhere else. Hope he stays, but could understand if he left. It would require one of Surrat/Jones to step up behind Washington at that spot.

And Wade. He's my candidate for a breakout game against Duke.

I'm split on Lewis. He showed some real talent. But on the other hand, he didn't really earn his spot. There wasn't much talent ahead of him.

We will see. It's a good problem to have. Surest is redshirting right?

State loses a lot of good players and I'm not sure what kind of incentive there is for Finley to stay because I can't see how his draft stock goes up next year. Same for Jackson at UL. I'd listen but would have a hard time being convinced that the Francois injury is the reason why FSU is 4-6 and not 8-2 or 9-1. We lose some key players, but I'd take our returning group all day long over the others.
