What's the latest on Wolford and the Jets?

Pres of Football Ops, son of the owner. Cert didn't hurt Wolf get a workout

Given Wolford's year and his whole career really, it's a shame he has to rely on connections for a tryout.

Really? I never looked at him or watched him play and thought NFL. I mean I have mad respect for him and we are going to miss him next year, but I can't see him getting picked up anywhere.

Yeah. He posts or used to post here back in the day.

This. John put together a very solid college QB season, but nothing ever made me say "now that is an NFL QB."

Solid pocket passer, can make things happen with his feet, good zip on the ball, great ability to scan the field and work through reads.

Big draw back is his size.

Wolford was an underrated QB for most of his tenure here.

Am I missing something here? His first 3 years showed nothing that made anyone think NFL. He had a great senior season. 1 great year and 3 not worth talking about.

One could entertain the idea that John "put it all together" as a senior. He improved over his four years at Wake, and really showed what he was capable of as a senior. His reading and comprehension skills seemed to be much better as a senior. The other team defensive staffs apparently didn't have the crib sheets about what play was going to be run based on them reading the signals of Wake's offense. Always helpful to the offense if the other team's defense is guessing what will be next, at least a little. Also, his offensive line improved, allowing him to maintain the upright posture his coaches preferred for throwing the football.

Seems to me his stat line alone against a tough schedule would justify a look see.

Offensive line improvements played a big role in his senior year performance - for much of his career he was simply running for his life. Who knows what his career stats might look like if he had a competent line in front of him all 4 years?

His senior season earned him a chance for a tryout playing with a full team of NFL caliber (or at least NFL tryout caliber) players. If you put Baker Mayfield on Wake Forest last season would he have put up John Wolford at Wake numbers? Baker Mayfield at Oklahoma numbers? What do those numbers look like for John Wolford on the Jets? I don't think it is that surprising that they're interested in giving him a look.

James MacPherson
College Scout

MacPherson joined the Chargers in 2014. He played quarterback at Wake Forest University from 1998-02 and went to camp with the Indianapolis Colts in 2003. He played in the Arena Football League 2 with the Green Bay Blizzard in 2006, and in the Arena Football League with the Georgia Force in 2007 and the Grand Rapids Rampage in 2008.

MacPherson jumped into coaching full-time in 2009 as the quarterbacks coach at Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona. From 2010-12 he worked in the United Football League, splitting time between the Florida Tuskers and the Sacramento Mountain Lions. He returned to Pima CC in 2013.

MacPherson graduated from Wake Forest with a degree in business. As a senior in 2002, he was selected to the ACC’s All-Academic Team, as well as the American Football Coaches of America’s Good Works Team. He is the president and founder of Santa’s Helpers, Inc., a nonprofit that provides toys and clothes to low-income youth in Southern Arizona.

To be clear, I think John deserves a shot. I just got the vibe that more people were thinking it was a guarantee he should get one. If I were a NFL GM he wouldn't have even been on my radar til this past year, and even then if I looked at the whole picture of his career I would have major doubts about his ability to make a roster.

I remember Wolford showed up as one of the top college QBs on PFF early in his junior year.

Didn't realize the Chargers had all these Wake connections. They should be a boards favorite when they dump Rivers.

Couldn't find the PFF mention but I did find this:
