Andy Katz Wake BBall Article 9/15

Colorado had 3 senior starters plus a lottery pick that topped out with a NIT bid. They will have to start over this season in the Pac-12 that is reality Bz left behind.

I think you are overestimating the expectations for the basketball program at Colorado. Yeah, you can go find some website postings of diehards who claim to expect a hell of a lot more, but I can tell you first hand that people were happy with Bz as a coach there when he left and were upset to see him go.

Let me get this straight...what's happened at CU for next years is [Redacted];s fault, but the disaster at Wake isn't Dino's fault.....at least that's what many here say...

Then who is at fault for Air Force's epic collapse after [Redacted] left them in a bad way?

I don't deal with the Dino stuff he is yesterday's news at this point. I do wonder how some posters want to argue that Burks proved Bz could spot talent but that Teague and Johnson reflected poorly on our staff at the same time. Some posters have agendas, I'm just trying to figure how to get out of this hole we are in now. I have no confidence that we are going anywhere good under Coach Bz.

[Redacted]'s only big time recruit at Colorado left after his sophomore year. Culture?

What does that have to do with culture? Did Alec Burks plead guilty to assaulting his girlfriend? Did he steal stuff? Did he skip class his second semester? Did he get caught toking up and not get suspended as a result?

deaclite was nice enough to answer that for me.

I'm not sure what's going to happen. What I think may happen is after the 12/13 season or 13/14, we'll be back on solid footing.

I can aslo see [Redacted] handing over the reins to Chill in a few years.

You are my favorite bzd-out poster.

Some numbers about our esteemed coaches career in the NCAA:

Career record in college: 119 wins, 129 losses -- 48% career winning percentage

Career record at BCS conference schools: 44 wins, 82 losses -- 35% winning percentage while coaching a BCS conference school

Conference record at BCS conference schools: 11 wins, 53 losses -- 17% winning percentage in conference games while coaching a BCS school

Conference road record at BCS conference schools: 1 win, 31 losses -- 3% winning percentage in conference road games while coaching a BCS school

What reality does my belief that Jeff [Redacted] is a horrible head basketball coach exactly ignore given those numbers?

I would love to hear something statistical about his coaching resume that points to the man being even a serviceable head coach in college. Please, please enlighten me.

I just threw up.

Agree with this. Losing players early is a sign of good recruiting (so long as they leave early because they're good, not because they get kicked out).

38-47 and 13-29 in ACC for first three years....Years 2/3 21-34 and 7-21 in ACC....K should have been fired....

I dread the culture discussion but I don't believe things ending up the paper are an accident. Other schools players have problems which are kept in house. Either we have the worst bunch in the history of college basketball or the purge and clean out program fits in saving Bz for years 3 and 4 and beyond.

That rat was hired at the age of 33 when he was just getting into coaching.

Jeff [Redacted] turns 59 in December.

Coach K recruited the number #! class in the country, you know Dawkins, Alarie, Bilas and Henderson. Maybe you have heard of them.

How do you keep a baby momma spine breaking and a drunk driving alcoholic quitting for rehab "in house?"

Nobody knows exactly what happened to Walker, so it's been kept quiet outside of the outcome. Ari was a quitter and was terrible last year anyway. Tabb was under wraps for a while until he ended up in a police report...

I think it's safe to say we had one of the worst bunches in the history of Wake Forest basketball. I thought that was obvious to everyone?

5 conference wins is possible fellas. The conference is not very strong top to bottom.

I fully expect a line going out my back door, around the side of the house, and down to the street will the lot of you lined up on your knees prepared to blow me.

I think it's likely we're every bit as bad as last year's squad. We couldn't possibly be worse, but only because last year we bottomed out completely.

Last season, we couldn't rebound the ball or stop anyone in the lane, down to teams like Presbyterian. But we only added Green inside, who's a project rookie not reasonably expected to be much of a fix to either of those problems. Then we lost our second leading rebounder (Ari) to a transfer, and then lost our tallest player (Ty, our third leading rebounder, best shot blocker, and backup center) and our only other power forward (Tabb) to criminal mischief. We are going to get absolutely annihilated in the post, all season long, by everyone. I think Nikita might foul out of every game we play if he's our starting PF (1.8 RPG last year), and Green and Desrosiers are soft big men rather than banger/defender type players (Carson only pulled in 3.2 RPB last year, lower than CJ Harris). Who's going to protect the rim? Who's going to rebound (besides Travis)?

Just think about our front line - Nikita, Desrosiers, Green. That's it. None of those guys, except possibly Carson, are currently anywhere close to being ACC-caliber starting big men. But they'll face UNC and Duke this year, with no other help. Losing Tabb and Walker kills us because when you don't have quality, you need depth. We have neither right now.

Of our returning guards - Harris, TC, Fields, Fischer - I don't see a guy who can consistently create his own shot effectively (that's where losing JTT hurts most--we desperately needed him to evolve into an end-of-clock guy). We lost our only consistent deep shooter from last year's team (Clark, although Harris is okay if open). Now the rookie Fischer is the only remaining guard we have with any kind of rep for consistent deep shooting, but we don't really know what he'll bring (based on his level of competition). Our starting backcourt (TC and Harris) will be very small, and only have freshman behind them. We will be better at the point guard spot (although TC was not good last year, in limited action, and Fields is an unheralded rookie), but I don't see that offsetting our lack of true playmakers at the guard spot. And we're back to having poor three-point-shooting guards, overall.

We are also likely to struggle on offense, overall. JTT and Clark were our second and third leading scorers (and our best shooters), and Ari was fifth leading scorer (and a decent shooter). Now, Nikita is our third highest returning scorer. Think about that. We should handle and pass the ball better, but who's going to average double digits this year? Where will the points come from (other than Travis)?

Travis looks fantastic, but he's going to be the focal point of every defense, all year, and we have no depth behind him at the three. I'm even not sure if he's a primary type scorer, or more of an excellent second option, garbage man scorer (like AFA). But we have no choice, really. Travis has to average around 17 and 10 for us to even be competitive, and even then I have no idea where the other points will come from.

I think the record will be eerily similar to last season, except perhaps we cut down the scoring margin a bit. But how can you look at that roster and think it can win ACC games? Thank god our schedule is laughably weak.

Someone please explain to me how I'm being overly pessimistic. Seriously. This is depressing stuff for a guy who loves Wake basketball.

Arlington, BC and GT are going to be bad at historic levels as well. VT lost most of their scoring. Miami lost Reggie and if you by the three....
