BBall Recruiting Thread 2k19 - Charles Coleman de-commits to Wake. :(

It’s definitely odd for a GA kid to go to the Upper Midwest (is that what you call it?).

Chicagoland is certainly not the Upper Midwest.

Hopefully we have better luck elsewhere, but I’m not even sure who else is on the radar beyond the 3-4 other guys we still mention from time to time.

To be fair, Massoud was almost completely off the radar with barely any mentions until he decided to visit Wake. There could be another Massoud-type or two in this class that, at this point, nobody on this board knows much about.

At least it appears the decision will be hard for him. Or else he knows it’s Duke and isn’t looking forward to disappointing our staff who worked harder for him.

So...sportsnut was right. RC107, is now an ok time for us to express concern and consternation?

There are a lot of kids with a lot of offers that we don't get. When it came time to set officials for the commitable offers available to him, this particular kid narrowed it down to us and Northwestern, and choose Northwestern. It's a kid you would expect Manning to be able to close.

Yeah, I wasn't defending Manning... I definitely agree that you'd like to think we could win a head to head recruiting match-up vs. Northwestern. Especially for a kid that fits this profile.

I just think it is a little more nuanced than NW beating Wake H2H. Honestly, there is no way we even know for sure if we finished 2nd. He could have decided after visiting NW, went on the Wake visit to confirm his decision, and just canceled the rest of his visits because there was no point.

Still, this is a kid who looks like John Collins and comes in w that level rating. That we couldn't sell him on that possibility w manning is an indictment

Yup. Jones would have been a sold get, and unless Samuel comes or we land some as yet unknown top 100 big man it definitely counts as a miss. But Jones was either going to slightly salvage an otherwise garbage class or help round out an otherwise solid class, so it’s probably still a little early to declare the sky is falling (see three weeks ago when we weren’t going to get any top 200 players). If Moore, Harris, and Samuel all commit elsewhere in the next few weeks then the hysteria will be justified.

Link? I remember people saying that about top 100, but not top 200.

In the interview with Evan Daniels, Jones said he knew he was going to Northwestern in July after the Peach Jam.

He also committed and decommitted from Auburn earlier in his recruitment. Of course he can say that he "knew" now that he has committed to NW. But he didn't verbal to Northwestern in July. And he didn't commit during his official there. Instead, he named a top 10, further narrowed his list in September and then scheduled officials at Northwestern, followed by Wake. We had plenty of time/opportunity to get him on board.

Evan Daniels changed his prediction to "Foggy" for Anthony Harris. Andrew Slater, who seems well-connected to Duke, made a prediction to VT yesterday.

I'm thinking there is more to Duke's missing recruits than its recent bad history with players transferring out and Wendell Carter's mom exposing K's lies. I'm starting to believe this is K's last year at Duke.

The only thing that could make the last 8 years worse is for Duke to take a dive and for Wake to be in no position to take advantage of it. Here's to hoping that K sticks it out a little longer until we can get our shit together.

Although it couldn't hurt our recruiting efforts and would help us to win Duke games, it is unlikely that Duke's decline would bring us the creme de creme players that Duke has been getting. We really never have recruited them. We can always hope that things change. I believe that we have much more to offer than in my day and we are winning national championships in other sports. The elimination of "one and dones" would prevent the annual rollover of top players at Duke and Kentucky.

What will balance out results will be if USA Bball and the NBA create an academy for the Top 20-25 players from each class. When you get below the Top 20, there are a lot more misses. More things come into play when everyone is going for #20-100.

That's not what I said. What I said is that we are in no position to take advantage of a Duke decline. We aren't positioned with a proven coach and formula. We spent the Odom/Skip/Dino years just outside and looking in at Duke/UNC/Maryland at the top of the ACC. We were in a position to possibly make the jump if any of them had declined. The current ACC has some elite teams with aging coaches and/or NCAA problems. There's potential for a large void at the top of the ACC as long-time hall-of-fame coaches start retiring. If we were in a healthy spot, we might be able to take advantage of that, but we have a LOT of work to do in order to even get back to that tier just below the elites.
