Hartman out for the rest of the regular season

One is not exclusive of the other...

Of course not, but the offense has been much, much better than the defense this year. I do agree that the defense played a bit better yesterday and has improved slightly since Sawvel was let go. I also agree that the offense hurt us some yesterday, but in my opinion it was the turnovers way more than anything else the offense did or did not do.

The offense is averaging about 225 yards passing and 225 yards rushing per game, which is really solid production.

Yeah, but the Oline I think has been disappointing as well. They were really supposed to be a strength, there was even talk of it being the best unit in the league. Losing Heron hurt, but they’ve been inconsistent and ineffective against good teams. I had hoped they’d turned the corner against Louisville, but evidently that was just a case of Louisville really being bad. Cuse’s defense is okay, not great and our “Beef Boys” got whipped yesterday. I think Haynes is the only lineman that has lived up to the hype. We knew the defense was going to be an issue coming into the year, injuries have even made it worse. The offense was going to have to carry us and in some big spots it just hasn’t stepped up. Of course I personally think that is to much to ask of a true freshman QB anyway.

The offense was the issue yesterday. If we have a serviceable QB on the bench I cannot understand why Sam was not taken out of several games; but especially in the first half yesterday. He missed some wide open throws and made some bad decisions. I know he is a freshman, but this was his 9th game and he has already played 2 of the best teams in America; so, he should not be making the same mistakes.
.
My take is that we do not have an adequate back-up. I hope that is wrong. Guess we will find out soon enough.

He also made a lot of throws to start the second half.

Agreed. His 2nd half was better...in part because he threw more to Dortch and he made at least 3 spectacular catches.

BTW, I'm a big Hartman fan. But, he would have benefited from being redshirted, especially after he played 4 games.

Yeah, Clawson commented that it was good to see Sam bounce back some in the 2nd half since so far this year when Sam has started bad, he’s stayed bad throughout. He said it was a good sign of starting to show some maturity.

We had a QB and he shit the bed. That's on him, not the coaches.

Exactly! When your senior QB and team leader doesn't know any better than to come back to school & not be ready for his drug test, he is no senior leader!

He’s a junior.

Really unfortunate for Hartman but few are surprised a season ending injury arrived at the doorstep of an 18 year old true Freshman playing QB at WF. Even if we had a bigger and better OL (which we should in Clawson’s 5th year) an 18 year old Freshman usually plays in a kid sized body. No wonder he’s seriously injured as many predicted would happen. Candidly, Clawson and Hartman made a BIG decision to play him in the 5th game rather than allow for more physical growth during a redshirt year. Now we’re asking a backup QB with little playing time in 2018 to lead the team to bowl eligibility by winning 2 of the final 3 games.

One of the primary reasons the offense is gaining a lot of yards per game is that the offense is running plays quickly. Therefore there are more offensive plays per game and more offensive possessions per game.

Of course, if there are more offensive possessions per game, there are also more defensive possessions per game. Meaning the defense will give up more yards and more points. And so our high tempo offense is directly contributing to our defense allowing more yards and points.

Wake didn't run many plays against Syracuse.

I assume there was a real time discussion of the decision to go on 4th down in our own territory with about 11 minutes to go and we were down 14, I believe. We ran two miserable plays on 1st and 2nd down, then turned the ball over on downs. Really puzzling.

The decision to go on fourth after the first three plays that series left me puzzled too. What did the staff see in the 'cuse defense that led them to believe that fourth down was makeable?

Wake is not going bowling. We barely have enough bodies for a practice. Time to spend the off-season hiring a new defensive coordinator, figure out just how in the hell our senior-laden OL could be so fucking weak and try go get people healthy. There is a ton of work to be done to get this program back to 8+ wins in a season. I have faith Clawson will do it. He knows the problems all too well.

Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?

No question the guy who was beaten out in the pre-season by a true freshman and/or the guy who wasn't interested enough in the team to take care of business would have gotten us more wins this season.

Who was beaten out? Hartman was QB3 before Newman got hurt, Hinton got suspended, and Hartman won the position by default. That’s the narrative I remember at least.

That was the narrative before Tulane. But Hartman still beat them out over the course of the season.

Has a modern Wake team ever benched a healthy starter? Our coaches love to stay the course.
