Unc fires Fedora

UNC could have done a lot worse than Mack Brown. If he puts together a strong coaching staff, then UNC will likely improve and be more competitive in the weak Coastal division. Gene Chizik and Kliff Kingsbury would be very solid hires for UNC. I expect that UNC's football recruiting will also improve. With how weak the Coastal division is, it is not difficult to imagine UNC competing to win their division in a few years.

other than Petrino when he briefly had a Heisman winner, have any of these rehires actually worked?

Nah, he checked out his last few years at Texas. If you're a hot young assistant, I'd go work for Herm Edwards before I'd work for a 67 year old who had long since checked out of his last job. This is a paycheck for Brown because he thinks he wants back in the game and didn't like Texas nudging him out the door. This has failure written all over it.

Herm Edwards is 64 and people were saying the same types of things about him when he was hired.

And ASU has a winning record with Herm. I think Herm had the real itch and trust him a lot more than I do Brown.

I don’t think it’s fair to compare Herm Edwards and Mack Brown. Herm is a high energy workaholic who these high school kids have been watching on ESPN virtually their whole lives. He is also a master motivator with younger minds. Mack Brown was a wet towel back when he went to two BCS title games, and the kids he will be coaching and recruiting won’t have much of a memory of those Vince Young/ Colt McCoy days. I know 3 years isn’t much of an age difference but when you’re in your sixties it actually does make a pretty big difference when you’re hiring someone to work 60 hour weeks and deal with the Snapchat generations 10 second attention span. Just my two cents.

You realize you just compared Herm Edwards to Mack Brown, right ?

The problem with the Brown hire is that he will be 68 before UNC plays its next game. Even if things go well, UNC will be looking for its next HC coach soon. Also, even if Brown surrounds himself with a good staff (which will have to see to believe), the head coach has to set the tone for the program, and it seemed like Mack Brown ran out of gas at Texas; his last 4 years there were weak. He is now 5 years older than he was when Texas pushed him out.

Also, there are some really attractive head coaching candidates that would concern me a lot more than Mack Brown coming back to UNC:

- Scott Satterfield App
- Neal Brown Troy
- Luke Fikell Cincy
- Brian Harsin Boise State
- Seth Littrell North Texas
- Matt Wells Utah State

That list doesn't even include top coordinators like Mike Elko, Dave Aranda, Brent Venables, Mike Locksley, and Kendal Briles.

Just not sure you make a hire when the best case scenario is that you will have to make another hire in 4 years.

$12 million buyout probably isn't helping things much either.

From Football Scoop: With Brown returning to Chapel Hill, sources have told FootballScoop that Gene Chizik could hop aboard as Brown’s defensive coordinator.
Oh no. Another retired oldish guy who failed at his last two jobs, has made his millions and whose glory days are behind him.

Sounds like what this hire needs is a PR campaign with absurd quotes from opposing coaches and tepid endorsements from former players.

It’s almost like they are related.

Poor UNC is having money issues now? Boo hoo.

If money is the issue, why would Brown and Chizik be willing to come on for lower pay than a less experienced staff? It's not as if they hold some sort of emotional ties to the Old Pissing Well.

One would think that after years away, money would be the motivation to jump back in.

Maybe it's just the lack of a long term commitment with buyout that makes it work?

Is there much of a bidding war for either of these coaches right now?

Mack would make a much better AD given his age and demeanor. Almost wonder if Mack and Gene are coming in for hopes of future much bigger paydays as Mack becomes AD and then Gene moves to HC if they can turn things around for the program and they get out under the huge Fedora payout noose? Or maybe they just have our state legislature raise taxes and send more to our cheating state institutions???

Not sure if he is still alive but I wish UNC had rehired a different old coach because the internet wasn't around to make jokes about ....Dick Crum.
