Wellman Retiring; Currie New AD

Ecstatic Wellman is gone, Currie is fine and most likely will do well. Tennessee thing is well Tennessee being Tennessee. It is kind of funny that Wake has such an affinity for anyone that attended Wake, is it just the athletic department or does it apply to all jobs? Is it the unofficial Wake guaranteed jobs program.

Can we divert some of yalls new deacon club contributions to a fuck you Ron Wellman billboard?

If Danny is fired, the choice will be Currie's. There's no way he'd accept the job without that assurance.

I agree. The date is probably contract related for one or both. I would be surprised if Ron is still coming to the office regularly for more than a week.

Bullshit. The Rutgers job was hands down the worst job in D1 college football. Schiano's accomplishments there dwarf what Grobe did. Sure he may have sucked at TB but Saban sucked at Miami. Pruitt may prove to be a stud at UT but compared to last 20 years of Fullmer, Kiffin, and Jones...schiano was 10x what they had sniffed at UT in 20 years.

Can't let this pass. Grobe winning the ACC title and 28 games in 3 years is one of the greatest feats ever in college football. If you think Schiano's success at the state university of New Jersey "dwarfs" it, you really don't understand Wake Forest.

Haven't read the whole thread, but is the quad rolled??

Odd timing all around. If we’re getting a new coach this year, it will be announced by a lame-duck AD.

That article is from the day before. There weren't years and years of MD to Big Ten rumors on the boards, even back when the Wake and MD boards were intertwined.

As the article clearly states, it was an on and off rumor for months. There had been some degree of speculation for years because of the dire financial situation that Maryland athletics was in and the Big 10’s stated interest in expansion.

Ph, just last week you suggested it would take months, or longer, for us to hire a new AD. Please understand my skepticism of your takes.

I thought the timing of this news was an indicator that more than just an AD coup d'etat was executed behind the scenes, such as lining up a coach already. But that buyout keeps rearing it's ugly head as many keep coming here saying it IS legit. That scares me and, if true, really puts a damper on the excitement surrounding a "fresh start." And then to read this from Currie, in Les' interview:

“I would say that the good Lord gave us two eyes, two ears and one mouth for a reason. It’s time to do a lot of listening, observing and learning,” Currie said when asked about his approach in evaluating the various programs in the athletic department. “There’s a lot of great things going on at Wake Forest. I need to make sure that rule number one is to not mess it up. I’m coming in to get to learn some folks and we’ll continue to chart an aggressive course moving forward.”/QUOTE]

Hopefully this is just normal public-face, AD-speak in these situations as it doesn't necessarily address Manning directly, but it was put in the article right after a mention of the BB program and their prospect of a third 20-loss season in 5 years. This gives me great pause and my excitement for already having a home-run hire (a la Matta) has really been diminished now.

Please, someone give me more hope. This buyout CAN'T BE TRUE!?? CAN IT?

Valid...dwarf is too strong of a word but rutgers was/is a much worse program with less resoirces than wake. And look where rutgers is today post schiano.

Looked it up because I was curious about this...

When Whit Babcock was hired at VT, it was Jan 24. He officially took over on March 1st. Prior AD had resigned due to health in November.

When Debbie Yow was hired at NCSU, it was June 25. She took over July 15. Lee Fowler resigned in May 4, but stayed on until June 30.

Wellman stying until May 1 doesn’t seem unusual. Having Currie all locked up from day one is the part that isn’t the norm.

Earlier in the season I thought it was a foregone conclusion that Manning was out, but with this turn of events I could see him hanging on. Still won't be surprised if he gets the axe this spring, but this sets up nicely for the AD to justify keeping him around at least one more year.

What do you expect him to say? He’s not going to fire him until after the season. The fact that Manning hasn’t been mentioned in any of this stuff today is a clear indication that he isn’t part of the future.

Public Service Announcement: now more than ever, it would be greatly appreciated for all involved if every statement like this was clarified to be speculation out of the blue, or a prediction based on inside information.

We'll all know soon enough. No need for folks on either side of the debate to get bent out of shape.
