Wellman Retiring; Currie New AD

Ecstatic Wellman is gone, Currie is fine and most likely will do well. Tennessee thing is well Tennessee being Tennessee. It is kind of funny that Wake has such an affinity for anyone that attended Wake, is it just the athletic department or does it apply to all jobs? Is it the unofficial Wake guaranteed jobs program.

Why wouldn't they give preference to Wake grads? Why would any school not give preference to their own grads? Look at it as placing more value on your own product.

Yep. Wellman did it on his own or people signed on. Either one is a major problem.

Wait... You still believe Manning has an $18 mil buyout!?!

I’m sure it’s higher than we’d like, but there is no way it’s high enough to keep him around. And I’ve always gotten the sense that any financial strings on the next hire were at least in part because some folks w/ $$$ weren’t keen on paying for another Wellman hire. That’s no longer an issue.

We’re still Wake Forest, so we won’t be signing Pitino (or anyone for $3mil+), but I suspect Currie will be given the green light to make a “big” (or at least bigger) hire.

Wait... You still believe Manning has an $18 mil buyout!?!

After a decade of malfeasance and willful neglect and just pure idiocy, you're still doubting the possibility that this is true? There seems to be lots of dissonance on the nature of the buyout still. Who's got the best #sauces? I can't rule it out until we know it not to be true. The near criminal negligence and mismanagement of our flagship program should give EVERYONE every ounce of doubt possible. Wish I could be quite as optimistic as y'all that all will suddenly be well, man.

Looked it up because I was curious about this...

When Whit Babcock was hired at VT, it was Jan 24. He officially took over on March 1st. Prior AD had resigned due to health in November.

When Debbie Yow was hired at NCSU, it was June 25. She took over July 15. Lee Fowler resigned in May 4, but stayed on until June 30.

Wellman stying until May 1 doesn’t seem unusual. Having Currie all locked up from day one is the part that isn’t the norm.

It’s not unusual at all. Look at NC State now. They announced the hire of their new AD on Jan 30, but his first “official” day is May 1.

Yes I doubt the possibility that it's true

The guy who broke the biggest surprise news in Wake athletics in 10 years also reported the $18M buyout. Sure it defies logic but that’s why Wellman is gone.

If Currie doesn't start until May 1 who is going to fire Manning?

And on the buyout, if anything remotely close to what has been rumored is true, we need a MAJOR overhaul of our AD processes.

Isn't that what this thread is about?

Goodbye Ron. You've done well with facilities, Soccer and Tennis. You picked a great fit with Clawson. But you also buried our Basketball program for a decade, and for the next 5 years. Good luck John Currie, I'm praying for you.

Yet, it's true that we extended him till 2024-25 season? That in itself to cast doubt on all judgment that went into giving DM more than a standard 3-4 year "recruiting" / anti-lame duck extension.

I certainly hope y'all are right but why do people keep disagreeing?

Didn't David Glenn break the Wellman news and Jeff Goodman the buyout news?

Sometimes logic is more important. Goodman has been wrong plenty of times (and he loves to push buttons). Manning’s buyout cannot be higher than the value of the contract.

Even if he makes $3mil a year (he doesn’t), that 6 year contract would have been a total of $18mil. After this season, it’d be 4 years at $3mil a year... So $12mil.

And I refuse to believe that is fully guaranteed.

But yeah, the fact that Manning got an extension when he did was clearly a poor decision. I say that fully aware that I was one of the people around here who was fine with him coaching this year.

Reading through other forums.... Kansas State fans don't seem to like Currie either

I think it's at least 8 figures, folks.

Isn't your math wrong? His extension may have been six years but we don't even know what his AAV is over the entire length of the deal. You would have to surmise, through logic that the full value is well above $18M for the entire existing contract.

But you're "refusal" doesn't make it fact. Fact is, we STILL don't freakin' know.

Didn't David Glenn break the Wellman news and Jeff Goodman the buyout news?

Yes. Goodman broke it and Glenn reported it again last night three months later. Seems to suggest it’s legit. Clearly Glenn has sources who could correct it.
