usic Thread

Hadn't head this in many years and can't get it out of my mind now.

I saw this ...what a band...I wonder how many youngins see Darlene Love and ask, "why is Danny Glover's wife from the Lethal Weapon movies doing singing with Bruce Springsteen?"

yo usic nerds

serious music Q - I'm looking for hip-hop music videos that acknowledge/criticize the white gaze - possibly defined as any music video where the white people's "looking in" on black community or lifestyle is acknowledged or becomes a primary conceit for criticism

like:

I was flipping through the channels and happened upon PBS' 75th Birthday Show for Joni Mitchell from last fall. All of the crew played Graham Nash, Emmylou Harris, James Taylor and even Los Lobos and a haunting version of Both Sides Now by Seal.

Joni has aged a ton over the past five years. I wonder if something is wrong.

But watching and listening led to some good thoughts of wearing out a copy of Court and Spark playing it in Reynolda Hall. Wake N Bake's dad let 1976, Sam, Caun, David, Sally, Ellen, Janine, Patti, Ingrid, Cindy, Sandy, Gregor and I control the music and the main room behind the desk. Cards, music and even live shows on the back patio.

The soundtrack in Reynolda Hall was mostly singer songwriters. The Quad was rock blasting from PIKA and Lamda Chi.

Joni had a stroke a few years ago, and also has some weird condition where she thinks threads or insects are under her skin or something like that? She has also smoked a LOT of cigarettes. Glad she's still around, though. Fucking genius.

Court and Spark-Hissing of Summer Lawns-Hejira is as good a three album run as anyone.

Also, consider checking out Folk Implosion. Their album Dare to be Surprised was awesome.

Oh word. I didn't realize Folk Implosion was in that universe. I remember one song of theirs from the mid-90s. It was on a soundtrack?

Holland Dozier Holland tune. Pre-teenage Ernie blazing on the electric though. That really took the Bros up a notch. Hell of a guitar player.

Holland Dozier Holland Invictus Sessions is a great album.

"Natural One" on the Kids sound track. I believe they did the whole sound track for that movie, but "Natural One" was a surprise top 40 hit.

Supposedly that top 40 hit put Barlow is quite the tail spin under pressure from record companies to recreate the success and he never pulled it off. He signed both his bands with major labels in late 90's and the nature and quality of music changed. He took a break from releasing new music from 99 until 2005 and has been doing good things since then. I'm an obnoxiously big fan of Barlow...as I said I named my first dog after him.

Here is a link to the full Dare to be surprised album in bits on youtube:

Nobody’s asking that

more tunes man

at a music festival when i was in college, in between sets we wandered over near a stage and there was a dude walking around with a boombox and another dude kinda timidly walking behind him going "no box music man, no box music"

I'm kinda surprised, but I kinda like Rag and Bone Man. Brits seem to always a bit more musical freedom.

Here's an unusual pairing for a fun song.

What are people’s thoughts on full blown, full volume conversations during shows, not related to anything going on with the music or show. Should be penalized by death right?
